He lost his equine friend of 8 years and is decidedly depressed.

While he's eating and doing all normal things, I can tell a difference in him. He's waiting for his buddy to come back but he's not coming back, and I can't explain such things to him.

Dink normally greets me like this:

I gotta find him another horse buddy.

On Craigslist there are a lot of horses looking for homes as a "pasture ornament" these days - you might try that. In my area we also have a couple of horse rescues where the horses are free, although the people who run the organization do stringent checks to be sure their horses are placed where they are safe and will be well cared for. Since it sounds like you have the know-how to care for a horse, you might see if there is a rescue in your area.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm needing a cow savvy ranch horse, and the rescues around here have unsound horses. If I was rich I'd start my own horse rescue!

In that case, I would probably post my own "Wanted" ad on Craigslist and specify exactly what you are looking for. I don't like to put my phone number out there, so what I end up getting is people emailing me with information about what they have, and from there I can sort through the responses to try to find the one that will be the best match for my situation.
