Anacona ducks!
We returned to a horrible situation tonight.
Two older drakes were beating up the younger Male ducks and nearly killing the little young girl duck. She was caught in the fencing and was getting her feathers plucked out an when she was released we Discovered her wing was broken. She could not stand on her own to drink water. The two younger boys were both being bit by an older drake duck. I had never seen such goings on in my life. What caused the older and much larger drakes to turn on the younger ones and hurt them? The older girls were hiding when we got home. We had never had this problem before. The older ducks were born towards the end of last summer. The younger ducks were born this Spring.
We have had ducks before but never experienced such happenings before.
What to do?
What to think?
Is this normal Anacona Duck behavior?
We are certain the little girl that was caught in the fencing has a broken wing. I could not believe my eyes, an older male duck pulling her feathers out trying to get to her. The other older duck was biting the two young ducks. Horrible!

I've seen my Ancona be very territorial with other ducks. Once they are side by side with a fence in between for a little while they do fine but they will turn on each other in a heartbeat of they haven't been together. I'm assuming yours were together for a while already and this would have been hormone driven. Are the drakes still breeding heavily or are they just starting to breed?

my calls accept younger members easily as long as it isn't breeding season and they are breeding age.

Mine are 2 month old teenagers, lol... been taking baby grey outside for short times during the day and they seem excited about him... I only let them touch him when I'm holding him though cuz I'm worried they might hurt him... he's terrified of course, but being alone (for now) I want him to know that he's a duck and not human...

Morning!

Deb, lovely description from the desert. It's nice when you can hear muted discussions in the distance, especially sounds of people having a good time.

Sam, that pepper looks super cool.

AnA, sorry about your ducks. I don't know much about ducks though, so I can't be of any help.

Hilma went to see her boyfriend again yesterday. She didn't seem too happy about it. But we should be getting another litter in a month.

Eemeli, the roo, seems to be a bit confused, he's started trying to mate the 10 week old pullets. They're not too happy about it. Emma still hasn't returned to production, but Töyhtis and Wilma are making a lot of eggs, and they're a pretty nice size too. Wilma is laying about 65-67g eggs and Töyhtis is in the 60-62g range most days now.
