I've done deep litter with both wood and dirt floor, I still love poop trays... But my deep litter never worked so great in the coop, in the pen it did just never got the balance in the coop (always got stinky)... And with the ducks in the mix I can't keep things dry enough for chickens with out changing the bedding.

Side note
The deep litter did well work in the winter though, but that was pre duck and with four ducks not 13...

Anyone doing deep litter with a multi species flock?

Kind of. Do chickens and rabbits (9) count as multi species? Some of the rabbits have open bottom cages, and I dump the others trays in the coop run. The chickens LOVE digging thru the rabbit poop. I think the rabbits are secretly laughing at them.

Our coop is deep litter and it's REAL deep right now. Have to get it shoveled out next week at the latest. It's windy, cold, and rainy here now. Winter snuck up on us.

. @minihorse927 , you hanging in there? Haven't heard from you in awhile. Take care! Well, gotta get ready for work. You all have a good day!

Dang @minihorse927 if only you lived closer!

@Outpost JWB winter is slowly approaching us too. Hoping fall will stick around for another 4 weeks here. I hear you on cleaning out the coop. Mine isn't in desperate need, the shavings look used, but aren't filthy. If winter was to stay away I could get away without cleaning for at least another month. But I really don't want to push the wheel barrel around in the snow should snow show it's ugly face.
At this rate, snow will probably show in the next 2-3 weeks and I really don't want to clean the coop just yet

Dang damp ducks.

My poultry pal picked up some heritage turkeys 4 of them. 1 tom 3 hens, can't wait to check them out. Might try some myself come spring... Be neat to hatch a few.
The muscovys are doing good. The babies are in great shape but the two adults seem to be in less than great shape. Loads of broken feathers and the female gets soaked to the bone when she swims, I had to towel dry her! Poor things. Hopefully by snow her feathers will be in better shape. I think it's just a case of poor pen keeping...

@hennible Turkeys are fun, so dumb, but so funny! Do it!!!! My turkey hen started to lay last week, her eggs are huge! Come spring, I plan to hatch every one of them for our own turkey meat. 3 Females will go into the breeding pen, the rest will get sold or eaten.

I have 2 standard bronze turkeys. They are housed with ducks and chickens. My rooster tries to chase the Tom off the feeder sometimes (approx 7lbs vs 20lbs +) and Tom gets that message for all of 3 seconds, he just loves food. The rooster gives up after the second attempt. Tom did not understand the message in the beginning when the hens didn't like his intrusion either. It was just the chickens that were upset and turkey just ignored as is if the chickens didn't exist when the hens came flying at him once in a blue moon.

The ducks just live around him. I don't think they understand him, besides staying behind him when Turkey displays. (almost like they made him their paid security guard)

When turkey does his displays, no one in the coop really knows what it means and they ignore him. The rooster doesn't even get offended.

My female however, roosts beside the chickens. Tom is too big now, he doesn't make it onto the roosts any more.

I'd say they all get along, if someone doesn't like something it's one sided, no fights, nothing! It's been great, and honestly if you know people that are afraid of big birds then a turkey makes a great guard especially when they display!

It's almost as if they are too dumb to get offended by other poultry...

sorrry, I am rambling
