we are overrun with ground squirrels here.... they dig burrows and can collapse a foundation Unfortunately not only are they smaller than tree squirrels they carry fleas that carry the plague... all the sites that do squirrel hunting say pass em up. But dang some of those communities can be as large as fifty or sixty. Borrego springs is very far east from San diego and they expect 117 by sunday. my house is 60 ish miles east of Borrego... so half way between san Diego and borrego. The only saving grace for Katee is my 24 x 24 foot shade structure and the high desert cools off at night.... some times a good 40 degrees cooler. Benefits of altitude and no moisture. the air cant retain the heat. and the ground is done radiating by a little after dusk.

I went out to get a prescription to day at 91 degrees I noticed it made me happy to be out to feel the warmth and absorb some sun.... I truely am a desert creature.

Yes. 'Oz' can't remember his username or thread, I had mentioned it on OFH thread a couple yrs ago and he said they use it on people (he used to work in a hospital), great stuff.
One other thing I always forget about and a lot of medical research backs it up is raw honey, seems weird but a lot of research on it.

Lots of topicals can be used on both people and animals. Though once used for animals I dont then use on people... cross contamination... Unless you go the steril application rout by using a tongue depressor for applying salves or gloves...

By the way @Beer can the way you addressed your dogs wound was outstanding. Surprisingly even with no stitches wounds can heal quite well with simply keeping it clean and free of insects and protected from dirt.

Back in the days before disposable needles and syringes wed stitch up a horse wound with button thread after cleaning of course and watch for infection. Cold water rinses to keep the granular flesh from growing rampant... and they were good to go. My mentor was a woman who had horse stables all over the world.... sometimes in places where there was NO vetrinary care.

I prefer the new meds and techniques but in a pinch you do what you have to do.

Thursday night, the predators got another chicken. Small CCL rooster who was at least 1/2 blind from roosters fighting. I saved him for breeding, but when he got hurt fighting last year, I haven't seen any breeding since. Dang pecking order. He was at the low end, so we crated him at night so the meanies wouldn't hurt him. Well, whatever got him, left feathers and blood everywhere. No sign of my roo. Then last night, I slept out on the back porch. Heard a scuffle about 2am. Woke up hubby, we got another coone. That coon was headed to the same opening that the rooster was dragged out of.....hoping we got it.

This means we have got at least 7 raccoons and 2 opossums. Ugh! I won't hardly sleep tonight either. Just too wound up trying to protect my flock! We boarded up openings and tried to make it Fort Knox back there with the materials we have on hand. Thinking the 9acres next door in combo with the woods around us, and 2doors down has empty/unlivable mobile home. Pretty sure there are critters living under and in the home. Someone comes & mows the yard, but we hardly see them & they are not friendly. Considering calling zoning. Just want to make sure I'm not crying wolf.
