It's tricky to stay on top of the messy ones.

I like that outside system, I have seen it made before with rain gutters hanging on the fence. Also saw on Oz shared out of bamboo. I stayed away from it as I didn't like the weather getting to it. Never even considered modifying the brooder to take a system like that.

Might have a play with the little brooder I have.

Love it! What a unique idea. I think those boxes can be pretty cheap at army surplus stores too. Maybe try a chandelier tapered bulb w/ low wattage since the ammo box seems to hold heat really well. Will you set it directly on floor of coop or on a cement block?

Think I will put it on a block just to make it safer.

I finally have a contribution hehe. these are not my ideas but I did modify them for the chicks. I hatch a lot of chicks. these are litter buckets and I used 2 inch 90 degree long elbows. I marked the bucket with the pipe on the bottom and that was my height of the hole in the bucket. I cut about 1.5 inches off the elbow and used the cut off part to mark the hole in the bucket. inside diameter. then I hot glued the pipe in the hole. the chicks can get all the feed they want. falls great no waste that I have seen. you could put an elbow on each side if you want. I put the bucket on bricks to raise it a little. these would work for older birds too. then you can move up to 3 inch elbows and 4 inch is required for some roos combs. I am converting most all my feeders to these. saves me feed time everyday.

the bottom pic is the inside of the chick feeder after a few days. the one above that is one I make for grown birds.

That is pretty awesome! I was confused at first about how you kept it from just spilling out. Them saw the last picture. Genius!

This is my scoop I made for scooping the sand litter in our coop. It works great. Made from scrap wood and hardware cloth.

Neat scoop for the sand in your coop. For those with smaller coops a kitty litter scoop works great. They can be found for $1 at Dollar Tree.

Here's my 5 gallon feeder for my 5 chickens. I got the idea from Jetdog here at BYC who posted the idea in another thread. This bucket is PRICELESS! Mine is a 3" pvc elbow.

The first picture is where I sprinkled pellets on the floor so they would get the idea where the food was located. Once they ate that off the floor, I never saw mess again!!!

I cut the elbow at the red line (see last picture) and threw the little part away.

that is what I did! I got my idea off YouTube. I use 2 inch pipe with chicks 3 inch with older chicks and small comb breeds and 4 inch for roos with MONSTER combs.

I have one white leghorn hen that is making a mess. I will try a pipe without cutting as much off. make it harder to get the feed out by shaking her head.

I used square buckets because the pipe sits flat so caulking is not needed. I did tack it with hot glue.

I know here in TN if you don't have many birds the feed can mold in the big buckets. I can tell putting more elbows will help keep the feed from staying in the corners.

Thanks, I have a tiny scoop I use for days where I just scoop under the roost bar. I use the big scoop for doing the whole coop and the run which is also sand.
