Mine just started on Layena crumbles a couple of weeks ago. They were getting Purina medicated starter/grower before that but when the 50# bag ran out I switched them.
Before the heat wave hit us a few days ago they were getting a few handfuls of Purina scratch grains thrown about the yard and run.
They get cut up red grapes with plain yogurt every morning and before my mealworm colony went to nothing but beetles (waiting for new worms now) they got a few meal worms here and there.
They get leftover hash browns on the weekends I cook them (yesterday) and shredded cheese from time to time. A few other assorted human food treats get thrown in from time to time as well. (can't remember them all right now but they are definitely yard sharks when I'm standing at the grill)
Curiously, I can't get them to eat lettuce or other greens.
Yes, they are spoiled.
But that doesn't stop them from mowing down my habanero plant in their spare time, as well as picking away at all of the various weeds and grasses in the backyard.
My RIR started laying 12 days ago and my light brahma started yesterday. The RIR made quite a production of the whole affair at first but now its business as usual. Not much time or noise involved. She did go from small to jumbo eggs yesterday. I'll bet I have 2 double yolkers in the fridge right now. The LB seemed to take a less dramatic approach to egg laying from the start, thank goodness, and her eggs are still quite small.
I have saved all of the eggs I have collected with the exception of 4 of the later model, slightly larger RIR eggs which I ate.
I finally worked up the courage to eat what came from my chickens butt (won't be eating anything from any of the other pet's butts anytime soon) a few days ago and this is what I have to report:
They were the strongest shells I have ever cracked (the yogurt maybe?)
They were tight in the pan. Not only was the yolk tight and bright orange but the whites held their form.
They were delicious.
I was wary of the first eggs because maybe she hadn't perfected it yet?
But seriously, maybe the first small ones don't have as much white? I don't know cause I'm going to blow out the first ones from each bird and fill them with resin so I can save them.
