Do I want to learn about genetics? Yes. Is it very intimidating and scary? Yes.

What is a recessive gene and how does that affect it?
Recessive means the chicken needs two copies of the gene to show the effects of the gene. A good example is the lavender gene.

Lav+ is not-lavender and is dominant
lav is lavender and is recessive

These are the lavender pairs:
Lav+/Lav+
Lav+/lav
lav/lav

Lav+/Lav+ is two copies of not-lavender, so the chicken is not lavender.

Lav+/lav is a copy of not-lavender and a copy of lavender, but since not-lavender (Lav+) is dominant over lavender (lav), lav has no effect on the chicken.

lav/lav is the only pair that will make a chicken lavender. Since it is recessive, it only shows if there is no dominant gene "hiding" it.

Ohhhhh Thank you! Would it be the same for other recessive genes, like recessive white? Like White+/White+ would mean the bird doesn't carry recessive white?
