I desperately want another silkie pullet but do not want to go thru the heartbreak of raising and getting attached to and then having to re- home what turns out to be a roo.

Does any place dna test their chicks to guarantee sex? It would be so much easier to add a chick rather than an older one to my existing flock. My girls can get very testy. Especially the Serama.

You can't vent sex at home, it's an extremely precise skill and you run a higher risk of hurting the chick than being accurate about its sex. Even skilled professionals still get it wrong roughly 10% of the time. Apparently ducks may be easier to sex that way, but although chicks can be vent sexed, it's not for the layman to try.

Furthermore, you'd have to buy the chicks first before you could even try it.

OP - I wonder if My Pet Chicken offers what you want? Otherwise, you'd have to find a private breeder willing to do it for you.

I agree! My Pet Chicken is one of the only hatcheries that sexes their bantams, and have silkies in different colors, too (black, buff, blue, white, and partridge, I believe...and probably have some splash, too). You should look into them. :)

MPC is pretty over-priced.. but so far every order i've gotten from them had gotten them right. None of the sexed bantams i bought turned out to be surprised cockerels.. If you plan on ordering from them i'd do it now.. They're sold out of most of their silkies until September or august.. I think they have around 30 buff silkies left for June..

That’s where I got my female bantam chicks from. I agree $15 is a lot for a chick that they say is a female. But 6 of 6 female bantams I ordered were all hens. I spent the money because last time I got st run bantams 90% were Roos.

Sexed silkies are actually $22 at MPC! :th
I'm cheap.. Would rather spend $5 on a silkie chick (Unless SQ) and just sell(Or even give away) whatever cockerels i end up with

I bet you could actually find an adult silkie hen for cheaper($20) if you spent enough time looking..
