Do you name your chickens and if so how do you choose their names.

I go by color. I have one that is all brown with a bunch of orange feathers around her neck and i call her chocolate orange truffle. There is one that is black and white with more white in the chest and neck so i named her Oreo. There is one that has alot of blue color in here and her name is blueberry. I have a cream colored one that is named cream puff.

I must have been hungry that day !

I have 24 hens, 4 breeds. I did name a few. First one to try to come to me in the box in our garage was a RIR. I named her Henny Penny after a hen a friend of mine had when I was a kid of 10. One jumped up on my wrist one day while I was putting food in the box, and she was a little chick still. I called her jumper. One black australorpe became friendly a little later, but still in the box in the garage so I called her midnight and could tell her apart, as I could tell Henny Penny, both by wingtip feathers that were different. Later in their permanent home a runt barred rock became so very affectionate and she still is not clucking at 13 weeks, and is the only one of the 24 who is not. So I called her chirpy since that is what she does all of the time. I take her to the garden for strawberry treats and she knows a soft touch when she sees me. She has become my favorite. Henny and midnight are no longer friendly, but jumper and chirpy are. Recently I was working on their fence and jumper jumped on my shoulder. She kind of comes and goes, but chirpy is always consistent every day.

I would never name any livestock that was going to be raised for meat tho.

Our kids named them after characters in children's books.
The runt Plymouth barred is Margalo (the sick chicken in Stuart Little).
Mrs. Piggle Wiggle (Plymouth Rock barred)
Our Astralorp is Alice, as in Wonderland)
Genevive, our EE is named after Madeline's dog.
Flick, Rick and Dicka are our three Rhode Island Red's.

And our lat EE, is named for a friend, Miss M.

Only name 'em if you're not gonna eat 'em. Dinner conversation... "so we're having Charlie for dinner tonight" you can see how that could be disturbing. I have mine for eggs and fun so they all got names when I could finally tell them apart.
3 buff orps
Alfredo--my dad's a sicko
Floppy- very floppy comb
Piquito- tiny comb

3 barred rock
Brunhilda- first one to plan an escape and I called her a little witch because I couldn't catch her
Oreo or Cookie- black and white markings
Grr- this hen growls all the time but she's a lover

We named ours when they were very young primarily based on color. 2 Buff Orps named Sunny & Ginger and 2 Australorps Lily & Olivia. Now that they've grown up & we've seen their personalities they should actually be called Bossy 1, Bossy 2, Spazz & Nosy

Most of the ones that can be told apart from the others have names. Only one of my 236 Leghorn hens is named, she is Speckles because she has, well, speckles all over her. My EEs are Erica, Eliza and Thumbelina (daughter named that one!!), my daughter named our Buff Orp Christmas (no clue why), and then my Silver Laced Wyandotte is named Lacey. Daughter named our OEGB Pinky, and I named her mate Johnny Cash. The blue OEGB is named Blue and the hen doesn't have a name. The Silkies are Prince Charming, Blueberry, Jackson, Madonna and Isabelle. My RIR rooster is Big Red (hens are not named). My black Ameraucana rooster is Black Jack (the hens don't have names either). Those are all the ones that are named.

We have three buff orps called Babs, Bunty and Eggwina and recently added three barred rocks called Wallace, Wendoline and Lady Tottington a.k.a Totty.
