Do you still buy eggs from the stores ?

Kroger is a major grocery chain in the midwest, i believe they also own albertsons out west as well as other regional chains.

Oops most of my reply got deleted.

Yes, if i wanted to sell at certain farmers markets in the area i could get more, however the extra expense would likely consume the additional income. Also i would need to expand a lot to supply a farm stand, i've seen some sell 10-12 trays of 144 eggs in a morning, I don't even want to figure out how many hens i would need for that.

i keep enough hens to supply us with plenty of eggs during the winter, but we get so many more than we can use during the spring and summer. We know of many families who request any extra eggs when we have them. They really appreciate the quality and i recoup the cost of production for those we can't use

albertsons? we have some around here.. i didn't know Kroger owns Albertsons

so that's what the farmers' market is for ? homeowners or farmers selling their own foods ?

it's a weekly type of thing there (every Thursday) but i didn't really know what they sell there until now ..never been to one either

We just dipped everyone for parasites so even though the product says we don't have to have an off period, I'm giving it two weeks anyways. Just in case, and this was the second treatment, so it's been a full month that we've been buying eggs. My eggy hubby has become accustomed to eating 6 or so a day after the gym, and wowie zowie batman! for practically an arm and a leg, we picked up some Grade A, Cage free - whatever that may mean these days of a decent brand, not like bottom of the line by any means, and the yolks were practically clear and just dinky compared to what we've gotten used to.

So, yuppers, we've had t buy recently and after not having to for the last year or so, it's been mind blowing. Makes me think again perhaps about getting my handlers lic. and doing the local farmers market! I could do organic... maybe?

are organic eggs worth the money ? or anything organic for that matter ?

There are lots of different opinions out there on whether organic is "worth it". For me, I don't like the idea of eating pesticides/herbicides so I tend to buy organic.

You just have to research and see if it's worth it to you.

i looked into it..

for some cases..i guess paying for organic.. doesn't really mean that you are getting organic products..

True. And for some things it may not even matter. I'm just one who avoids chemicals where I can - essential oils instead of air fresheners, vinegar for cleaning, natural soaps, etc. I also avoid processed foods.

Everyone is different in what they choose.

For shopping, I use this list as a guideline:

what's the best way to clean those filters (full of grease and oil) in those range hoods? do you know a more natural way with no chemical?

as for the list.. are those the veggies and fruits that i should be buying organic for?

The dirty dozen are the ones you want to buy organic. The clean 15 are the ones that are ok to buy regular.

Vinegar is a great cleaner. Baking soda is also a good cleaner.

I haven't bought store eggs for over 15 years. Around here you could never compete with the grocery store eggs, 99 cents a dozen when they're on sale "which is like every other week". I keep myself, my folks, my neighbor, and my little ole egg lady in town "she just turned 96" in eggs and that's good enough for me. Break even??? Whats that??? I don't think is possible to raise chickens for eggs and ever break even lol.
