Does anybody get FLACK from Family and Friends for having Chickens?

In the beginning, people would often say my chickens were stupid. After I taught one to fly a kite & another to pull a miniature chariot in races at fairs, I became the "tell us a story" guy at family gatherings & friend's parties.

After having appeared on tv, & in numerous newspaper articles & also featured in an international kiting magazine, I'm simply referred to as...."That Crazy Chicken Guy"

I used to get it also. So fustrating. Now I raise the family turkey twice a year. We give eggs and broilers away. We also trade our fresh pork for beef with the neighbor. Now their proud to know us and tell their friends.

Yep your stupid, being self-sufficient, eating healthy, being outdoors, controling and enjoying your life.
As the smart azz people run around in cookie cutter SUV's, to cookie cutter jobs, home to cookie cutter houses, married to the material things that they think makes them happy.
cheeptrick, you are the one who has it figured out!

Cheeptrick,
Everybody in our family loves our birds...nine hens, a rooster and a duck. There are special times. My grand mother in-law turns 100 at the end of February. For several years, lately, it seems to be a great mental stimulus for her to come visit with us, in that she will just sit and sit, as most elderlys do anyway, and endlessly watch our chickens. She gets rather nostagic or sentimental as she starts off on stories of her childhood. Those birds have been a real bridge for the generations, as we all, even the children, enjoy listening to her talk about her family and her life, on the farm in the early 1900's. It seems the birds and their behavior have never changed at all for her.

My bet is that someday, you too, will have special stories about your birds that you can share. Certain of your family members will have missed out on a lot, in that respect. Enjoy them!

From my family i usually get FLACK about: The way i dress, the length of my hair, the people i hang out with, my girlfriend, my music and so on and so forth.
Likening chickens seems to be the one thing they DON'T pick on me for!

My husbands dad and step mom definately tried to discourage me when I said I wated chickens. They told me it was ALOT of work and that I'd have snakes in the summer(they know I'm terrified of snakes). I think they used that to try to scare me out of the idea. Now that I have them and save all their poo for them to use in their gardens, they don't say too much! My next door neighbors call me "The Chicken Whisper" b/c I pick up my chickens and hold them and snuggle with them.

Aw...I'm sad for you. I feel the same way sometimes about how I think people talk behind my back at work. I love my chickens so much and I like to talk about them! I sorta learned to NOT talk about them around some people...but there are others who totally appreciate and understand my hobby! I live in a very "white color" community and I work for an attorney! I feel like a misfit sometimes...but, I am a totally interesting person and I have a very unique hobby! I try not to let it get to me...and sometimes I just feel sorry for those folks who make fun of me, because they must have some sort of insecurity that is driving them to make fun of me.

Ya allot of people at school and my little bother at home. I either just ignore them tell them to shut up or explain to them why chickens are the best. They just eventualy leave me alone.

My mom calls me mr. perdue but it dont matter to me. I love my babies and eventually she will love them. its funny how this one guy comes around on his bike and says "hey where are your chickens. The only reason I come around is to see them in the yard" Also the neighbor who is moving loves them as well.
