Does anyone else keep an EGG LOG?

I keep track of how many I get per day, and then add up the total at the end of the month. It's rather eye-opening...last month my chickens laid 281 eggs!

I kept a log for a while, and also feed recipts. We wanted to see how much our eggs were costing, not including the cost of the chickens & their coop and supplies.

No point in keeping a log while my girls are molting, though

I've got what's called a "Book of Days", in which I track holidays, weather, my garden progress, and # of eggs. I started it this August, so don't have multi-year tallies.

Typical entry:
2008 - Rained today. In the low 40s. YAY Pacific Northwest! Eggs: 1, 48g

I keep track mentally. I have five that are laying now and one of them only lays speratically. I could not figure out how I was getting this one cream egg when all my chickens were laying brown eggs and the only other chicken in the coop was suppose to be a roo. Well, low and behold that crowing rooster is a hen and she is laying the cream egg. I have 16 12 week old comets and when they start laying I think it will be impossible to determine which hens are laying every day. But for now I now the dark egg is my white rock, the pink egg is the partiage rock, light brown is the wyndotte and the small brown one is the cochin. The cream egg is the hen that wants to be a roo.

I do! I keep track of total eggs laid (There's also columns for broken or softshelled eggs), as well as how many of those laid are in condition to be sold. I also keep track how how many dozen have been sold. I printed out a spreadsheet to use, but I haven't taken the time to transfer the written data back into excel and play with it at all yet.

I also keep feed and supply receipts... I have to have those to file our schedule F. The number of eggs sold will be reflected as income on our schedule F as well.

I think I will start one at the beginning of the new year. I used to when i was a kid, I went through my old journals and found where i wrote down how many eggs we were getting when i was 8-9 years old.

i was...until they stopped laying for me! we stressed them out when we brought in the new chickies

once the chickies start laying in the spring, I will have an egg log because we will be getting about a dozen a day

Hi,

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one doing this. Now I can tell Hubby there are many others that keep track of their eggs!

In my first post, I forgot to mention that I have two "sets" of coops. One more toward the front of the property (2 coops with separate runs) that house my older hens. There ae a total of 22 older hens--7 RIR's, 7 Silkies, 3 Leghorns, 2 Frizzles, 1 EE (an exceptional layer of green eggs), 1 Polish, and 1 unidentified small black and white Bantam. I keep the RIR's in one coop and all the rest in another. Surprisingly, the Leghorns get on very well with the Silkies and all the others!

Then there is another coop and run at the rear of the property that houses those hens that are just coming into laying age. I had to keep them separate from the rest, as they were only eating grower food until very recently. I have started a record for the rear coop as I got three eggs from them, so far. There are ten of them and they consist of 4 RIR's (I believe I got the 3 eggs from just one of those), 3 Frizzles, 2 Cochin mixes, and one extremely small unidentified Bantam. We hatched the 2 Cochin mixes and the tiny Bantam from eggs that were given to us back in July. I was told the RIR's were hatched at the same time.

I also keep other notes on my calendar, such as when I got any new chicks, when I need to change the feed from starter to grower, and any unusual or interesting "happenings".

I don't keep a record of the cost of feed since I don't sell the eggs. I think I don't really want to know, as I'm sure this is not a profitable venture--I feel like I'm constantly buying 50 pound bags of feed. But I have PLENTY of eggs to give away to the neighbors to build up good will!

I wish to thank you for all of your posts and I hope they keep coming! Genie
