Its really hard to break a Muscovy duck from broody once she sets her mind to it believe I have tried. So I just let them go I do take all eggs away though because no need of nasty rotten eggs in the nest you could get fake ones for her to sit but you have to make sure she comes out every day and eats drinks baths and poops. Some do some won’t. Only other thing you could do is break up the nest and lock her out but then you risk her going someplace where you can’t find her and getting killed by a predator . My Muscovys have a big molt in late fall. That’s the only time I notice molting they lose their flight feathers. The mail man told me the other day they had boxes of chicks up in the office waiting for pick up it made me smile thinking others around here enjoyed poultry too.

Aw, maybe I’ll let her have a couple of fake eggs. It is her first time after all. At this point, she still gets off her nest and goes on adventures with her sisters, but she yells at me for a bit beforehand and calls me rude names. In the morning, I am able to tempt her off her nest with patience and a few mealworms and then she leaves her eggs for quite some time before returning. It’s a good thing that the eggs are infertile, as she still prioritizes going to the garden for earthworms over sitting.

Hi,
I have two, 2.5 week old ducklings, Forest and Lt. Dan, they are so silly and wild! I clean their brooder once a day, and add pine shavings during the day to help with the moisture. I currently dispose of the brooder waste in my city compost bin that gets picked up weekly. I opened the bin today and oh my the gnats were abundant! Is there anything I can do to keep the gnats at bay? I plan on composting the shavings and stuff once I get my compost bins built. Thanks in advance!

What should my 14 day duck eggs in the incubator look like. The first week I saw the veins in all (I have 7). Im not sure what I’m looking at now. I see the air sac on all but the rest is hard to figure out. I’m using a candler that is on the incubator.

There is not really anything you can do...duck muck attracts gnats...its just what happens. Your babies are cute!

THAT IS SUCH A HARD QUESTION! My top 3 are: 3. Pekin 2. Runners in general 1. Khaki Campbell (even though I have none they are very interesting). What are your top 3?
I got runner/khaki - they are good to each other -I watch them day and night!
do not know what they will lay or weigh...

One of my ducks has a balding patch of feathers missing on her head. I don't see the male mate her that much but when he does he is real hurtful on there heads. There is no bleeding and all looks good just there are not many feathers. I don't think there is anything I can do just wanted to see what y'all think. I mean other then separating I don't there is much to do. I am not concerned because she acts and seems fine..besides it not looking that beautiful.

Also(I will try to post a pic when I get home) it I think my duck has sap stuck on his face. I have no idea how to get it off. It has been there several days and I just thought it would come off....nope. Anybody had experience with that?

My females tend to lose feathers on their heads too. As long as the skin doesn't start getting sore and open wound not much you can do. maybe make little helmets!

I have no idea what would take sap off of feathers. maybe goo gone but not sure that would be safe to use on a duck.

I accidentally thrown paint on mine.. well, more, they forcefully wanted to be around me while painting...anyway. Molting helped :')
I could have used something to get it off; but that would involve something that could disrupt their water-proof feathers and start them leaking.
I guess; when the duck has no problem with it; leave it on. Otherwise maybe try a natural oil gently? Sap is quite sticky, so if it needs a thurough rubbing to get it off I would personally just let it go away when feathers are replaced. Execive rubbing might do more dammage then the sap just being there? You know best.
