yes, Standard Poodles are anything but froo-froo dogs They are a hunting breed and have some good protective insticnts. Again, you are going to have to get a good breeder who breeds for correct temperament.
Watchdog's suggestion of Belgians are another idea.
One thing to remember, it is better to have a dog that would run and hide than one that would bite when it shouldn't. Any dog that will bark is going to be a good protector, just by the nature of his presence. The most important part of SCH and other protection training is the obedience. Biting is the very last stage for a reason and it should never be up to the dog to decide to bite or be protective on it's own.
I'd suggest going to talk to responsible breeders of the dogs you are interested in. They can tell you best if their particular dogs will fit your situation.

No matter how well tempered the dog might be (Goldens), doesn't mean it's not going to protect it's family when push came to shove.

OP, not sure if it's been mentioned (new BYC loads really slow on my computer) but Newfoundlands are very big and the ones I have met are really lovely dogs.

My parents show and raised Rough Collies for a long time and they are great with kids. Never had one that are mouthy but training comes in place as soon they were old enough to walk around. So no issues there.

I LOVE the Smooth collies....I remember Black Hawk of Kasan and Starr's Blue Jeans' smooth descendents. Both of them are long gone. Even the smooth white collies are awesome!

The coat are work in to themselves that you HAVE to keep up with the grooming or they will get hot spots or tangled mess of hair that you have to end up cutting it off. The long hairs of the collies are there for a reason, to protect and insulate from the heat...don't ask me why but they just do.

My uncle has raise and shown Newfies (Bear Traxx) and they did well in livestock and herding but do better in water rescues. Lots of hair and plenty of drool. Great with kids as well.

The Golden Rev. are not very good around here, very hyper and bad breedings. I used to remember they were very gentle and laid back and got the BRAINS to think of anything that requires them to do an extra step. Same for Labs. Nowadays its pitiful and to get the BEST one, go get one from a very reputable breeder! I can not stress that enough. Sure you may pay a bit more but in the long run, it paid itself many times over when you have livestock being saved by the dogs.

As for the Presa....definately NOT! Not for a novice anyway.

The dog I had from when I was 5 to 19 was a Rhodesian Ridgeback, his name was Duke. he would follow me everywhere and would pick me up from the bus stop everyday. He even broke through a window when another dog attacked me! RR are a very brave and protective dog. In fact they were actually bred to hunts lions! RR are very heat tolerant and also very athletic. RR requires positive, reward based training, and moderate exercise. They are a hound and can be somewhat stubborn at times, but with the right upbringing they can be excellent dogs. Just make sure to find a reputable breeder.

i agree,just looking for breed qualities that fit the best.

The best dog breeds in the world for pets, children and playfullness are typically trainable and love atttention and other animals; Labs, retrievers, and there are several colors available of both breeds. I am a foster rescure for labs and retrievers and never met a dog in either breed that was agressive, the dogs I have fostered have come from all kinds of predicaments and different ages as well. Personally I LOVE chocolate labs and golden retriever, retriever shed more. Gppd luck and choose wisley look at rescues too because you can get a pure bred dog neutered and vet checvked at a very resonable price....and they all deserve lovng homes.

i knew 2 of them and they were the smartest dogs i have ever met.they were very protective of my friend when needed and had the sense to tell the difference.and they don't shed like other dogs.my friend bred them for all the right reasons and they were amazing.thanks for the reminder because it was a long time ago.

i do like them but have never seen one since i have been back in georgia.they probably can't handle the heat very well.it is over 100 alot and just miserable here in the summer.

i rescued a RR from animal research when i was in the Army.she was 5yo and her time was up.of course she was pretty traumatized and didn't really react like she would have normally to anything.she didn't really know how to be a dog.the only time she got really excited was when we took her to the park and she got to run.she did like to meet other dogs and learned to like our cats and other critters.she spent the last 8 years of her life sleeping on her sofa just being loved on.
i really can't go by her personality and would think their prey drive would be too strong for the farm animals.

ok,first of all am not getting one but since this is what started this thread i will tell you how the person of the ad responded:


person with the presas,she got her for her then 3 yo child and has been inseperatable ever since.the dog is 2 yo old with no papers.

the father is an 18mo 150# registered rottie.the owners of the rottie have small children so she assumes he is good with kids.

the 5 puppies are 5 weeks/10lbs and have been vetted/dewormed and are starting to eat solid food.
