Does Anyone Use Wing Bands?

You can write numbers on the snap on plastic leg bands.....

I am too aware of the limitations of Sharpie markers in my environment -- garden plant stakes' lettering lasts only a couple months.

I use numbered Zip Tie Leg Bands.

How do you number them?

I use wing bands.
And a notebook.
I wait until they are around 2 weeks old to apply them since their wings are too tiny for me to attach them accurately.
Some folks dont have a problem.

If I need to identify at hatch, I use colored bands until then.

Each bird gets a band and I write the number in my book along with the hatch date, parents and any other chick info.
As they grow, I can add more notes for that particular bird.

The only drawback is having to handle them to see who they are but I consider this a plus.

This is what we used on the farm in Hertforshire years ago but the tip was wider. It needed redoing from time to time.

I know I *should* but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

I pulled the trigger…OMG, it is so EASY! You should just do it!

Only downside is those bands are so small, trying to move enough feathers out of the way to read them one handed (because you’re holding the chicken with the other hand) can be challenging…

Very true.
I struggle with this every time But no mistaking who they are once I can read it.

I put different colored zip ties on the legs of my special ones if I can't identify them by sight. It makes it easier to spot them quickly. Then I just confirm with their wing number.
