Lucky knows this will be a good year, so she decided to stick around and not miss any of it. A good year to all of us.

Look how much time you've gifted her.Well, my girl is swelling up again. This morning I tubed 60cc warm pedialyte to prep her for a draining. Then at lunchtime (warmest part if the day) I ran up the hill and pulled 60cc out if her. I had not let her skin get quite so taut, so she did not gush afterward… just a little bit of dripping that did not seem to last. A few drops were pinkish, so she must have bled just a tiny bit. After draining, I tubed another 60cc of warm pedialyte and put her back with her friends. I think she’ll tolerate this draining just fine, as long as she doesn’t get infected. However, I’m not sure that it was really enough. Poor girl. Looks like we might be on regular draining until she declines further and then I’ll have to put her down. Right now, though, she seems OK.
Shoot, Carol. I missed that you suggested sugar. Do you think she’ll be OK with two 60mL hits of clear pedialyte?I've had terrible luck draining chickens with ascites. Infection from the needle killed the first one, and the second one died of heart failure or shock, I believe was from dehydration.
Give Lucky a big hit of electrolytes with added sugar as a precaution. If she has an infection from the draining, the tissue will be bright red where the puncture was.
I am so sorry, Carol. Thank you for the information. I didn’t want to stress her out with a full crop, which is why I did it right after the draining (as well as in the morning). Also, I just went out to the coop and brought a bowl of baby bird formula with Nutridrench and sugar added in (to quickly increase and hopefully sustain blood sugar). Lucky took several big, chompy bites. I’m happy. She still has a very wet section of feathers where she is probably still dripping. There was lots of chatter in the coop while I passed the little bowl around via red headlamp and Lucky sounded like herself.Yes, it's close enough to the draining that it should keep her electrolytes balanced. Next time, though, give it to her right before the draining. My hen died within an hour of draining.
She got a few very good months from your excellent care. Sweet girl. I'm sorry.Hi friends. Lucky is already swelling back up again and her breast muscle is wasting. She did some normal chicken things over the weekend, but she moves slower than everybody else, and at times I can tell she isn’t comfortable. The last two nights, I went into the coop with a very dim flashlight and offered her baby bird formula with lots of aloe detox in it. She ate heartily both nights. My hope is that the nutrition combined with the detox helps her feel a little better. Sweet girl. I know I said this at Thanksgiving, but she’s definitely on her way out. I don’t know how much longer she has, but I want her to enjoy it and know she is loved.
