@Eggcessive Kim, I’m tagging you specifically because I believe you are or were a nurse, correct? I understand that veterinary medicine and human medicine are not necessarily the same but I’m hoping you’ll know the answer to this. We have other very experienced people on here and I’d appreciate if they would weigh in, as well.

My chicken Lucky seemed to get her laying hormones back recently, but did not produce an egg and now she’s swollen up quite significantly. I can definitely tell she has discomfort. I was able to draw some fluid off of her today and was surprised to see that it has a green tinge to it. Does that mean infection? I understand that ascites is just a symptom and she has an underlying condition causing it, but I’m wondering if the color of the fluid gives us a hint at all. Thank you!

I was only able to do one syringe full, as I could not manage holding onto her and then coupling the syringe from the tube by myself. However, she did continue to drip significantly on a towel on my lap, and then afterward, when I released her. I hope it provide some relief for her today.

I don’t think so. The fluid does not appear to have egg yolk in it. Of course, that’s still a possibility, anyway.

I have to go on a work trip Wednesday through Friday of this coming week, so would not be able to start antibiotics until after then. Feels like a long way away.

When my duck was laying internally, the fluid extracted was opaque yellow - like straight egg yolk. This looks very different to me.

So this is a bit alarming to me. I took the fluid off Lucky about 14 hours ago. I just got home about half an hour ago from Thanksgiving dinner and she is STILL DRIPPING. I thought taking too much fluid off a hen with ascites can send them into shock. I offered her some liquidy baby bird formula via red head lamp and she took a few sips. I also placed a microwavable heat disk beside her to cozy up to if she wants since a strip of her back side is wet and it’s 41°F out. I tried to get a feel of her abdomen and I think the swelling is gone. My gosh, I hope this doesn’t kill her.

Poor girl. I hope she hangs on.
❤️ :hugs

If she does pass, it wouldn't be the draining that caused it. It would be the fault of whatever underlying disease she has.
