Well, before I type tonight's update on the duck I wanted to ask two more questions...
The first is, when will I need to wash her with epsome salts again? I'm presuming if I see more have hatched and gathered in her wound, I should bathe her and get them out like tonight...? Otherwise, how long until the next bath?
The second is, I totally forgot to get pictures and add this, dealing with her wound and all, but does anyone know what these yellow clumps (all little pieces packed together but easy to tear apart) are that were on her feathers? I cut must of them out but there are a few little pieces left, hope that's okay I did that.
I'm pretty certain they were already there from last night, or at least this morning. I'm trying to remember now.
I was able to clean her wound out well tonight, although I know for certain there was a maggot or two I just couldn't get, and I didn't want to pick at her anymore. Plus I know the epsome salts help to kill them. She sat there like a champ and hardly struggled at all, surprisingly. She's such a dear, so much better than my hand-raised drake who got injured last year and was fighting me every step of the way.
We have protected her against the flies as best we could since I'm not allowed to keep her in the garage: as I already might've mentioned, we have put mesh bug netting over her entire cage, strung up fly traps, and put fly repellent around her wounds. We also moved her cage, and all evening long I have hardly seen a fly. Hoping they stay away and our efforts worked!
Lastly, I know you all love pictures, so here she is. Her feathers are a mess right now but she really is a beautiful bird.
Tonight she stood for a while, but once I was done with the epsome salts I tried to tweezer out any remaining maggots and she settled against my foot and laid there without moving an inch the entire time until I had to reposition her. She's still rather lethargic although she has stood a few times and has struggled against me a bit. I believe she is drinking, but not eating. I haven't actually seen her drink but I've seen her reposition herself in front of the water bowl a couple of times whenever I go out to check on her.
