Advise for plucking and cleaning wound? Tools?

I mostly just use my hand.. if the wound is really dry when you get back, get a soaked warm washcloth and hold it over it for a bit. I find this also relieves some pain and calms the animal, so I often take “washcloth breaks.”
Then just use some gauze, cotton rounds, wet paper towel, whatever you got. Put a liberal amount of betadine on your cloth of choice and start agitating it into the wound. This is a messy process, don’t be alarmed at the dark betadine stain.
This is when the warm washcloth breaks and knowing how to be “gentle but firm” helps. You might have to flush with saline and go in for a second betadine cleaning inbetween clearing out feathers before you can be really satisfied that it is clean. Afterwards, gently pat dry the wound and surrounding feathers.. apply a liberal amount of your ointment of choice and place her back in confinement.

She’ll probably be very tired, but make sure she’s drinking and clear eyed. Try and dry her as best as possible to avoid being chilled.

Sorry about your babies. Almost had same happen with 4 month old chicks. Had 3 wild dogs tear up small run yesterday. All is well. Prayers for recovery of yours.

Wife's pretty upset but hanging in there I was devastated at first but got thru all that pretty quickly. I process stuff fast and work best under stressful situations.

Everyone's taking it in stride especially the boys. It was expected that something like this would happen at least once during this journey, just never thought it would be my best friend who caught me slipping.
