Those big dogs don't live long on average. That's one reason I haven't gone that route even though most are gentle giants. I don't know if I could handle the loss at a younger age. It's hard enough when they live past 10-12 years.

I still dream about a big old lap dog. :)
No, they don't and it's terribly sad. Nahla is only 6 and I hope has another 6 to go :fl
If you like big lap dogs you'd just love her

My dad has lost 4 St. Bernards at 6 and under, though. Bad breeder.

That would be heartbreaking. :hmm I hope Nahla lives a good long life too. :fl

@KDOGG331 old girl is a golden retriever, and I like to say she is not grey in the face, she is just sun-bleached from all her outdoor adventures.

Sled dogs would be fun. We've talked about adopting a retired sled dog, but I think it would be extremely difficult because they have not been socialized in the same way, nor have they lived in a house. I have a local friend whose family breeds malmutes and does have some trained as sled dogs. I've been wanting to tap into that knowledge and go out on a sled with them sometime and see what it's like. If it's just you on a short trip, you really only need one or two dogs to pull you, not a whole team. It would be such a fun activity where we live. Another fun activity people do with dogs that are good pullers is ski jouring.

I grew up with a Golden--sweetest dog ever! I always refer to sweet animals as Golden Retriever_____(horses, cats, etc.!). One of my Australian Cattle Dogs was definitely Golden Retriever at heart. There is a reason they use them for therapy dogs! BTW, "career change" dogs--or therapy dogs that don't quite have all the requirements, make fantastic pets! A local police station just adopted a Guide Dog for the Blind dropout. He just needed to go to the bathroom every 2-3 hours and not the 4-5 hour window they required! I love Canine Companions for Indepence in California. I've visited them and I have recommended to many people to get on the waiting list for one of their "career change" dogs!!!

I'm not really into breeds. I choose dogs depending on their needs. All of mine have been rescues so I'll probably just get another rescue.

Technically most of my animals have been rescues besides the chickens and ducks.
What's exciting about the poultry...is you can get purebred fancy breeds and they are $5!! Hahaha! Try getting a purebred dog/cat/horse for that!!!

Maybe you should get an English Setter, then!! I've never seen a lap dog quite like them!! Although my Cattle dogs were lap dogs! And I could fit two on my lap!...often with a cat!

I got a purebred beagle for free, she was 3 at the time. She is 7 now.

I understand how people want purebred dogs, but what I don't understand is a lot of people aren't willing to adopt a purebred dog that is in need of a home. That part is sad to me.
