I just jumped from the first page and haven't read all the posts. I'm so sorry for your loss. It just breaks my heart. One thing that was recomended to me for injuries is honey. Warm it up so that it is runny but not hot and cover the wound with it. People have told me it does an amazing job in healing many wounds. Hopefully you will never have to use it but I wanted you to know. Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss......:aww

I really do hope you think long and hard about getting rid of your dog though. He was only doing what comes natural to them...... That is just a chance we take when we decide to have chickens and dogs. Whatever you decide I am sure will be the right choice for you and your family.....

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's amazing how attached we can become to our chix. We too had one of our dogs attack my favorite barred rock. She lost a bit of flesh and never grew back her feathers in the rear area by her vent, but she recovered (kept her in the spare bathroom for a week and was diligent about keeping it clean). Also, our Jack/Russell terrier mix literally plucked 2 of our chickens, on separate occasions. Both chickens grew back their feathers and you'd never know what happened. I was so angry with both our dogs (we have a total of 4 pups).

That being said, as much as we love our chickens, we love our dogs too. It was our fault for not being prudent in watching our dogs closely when out in the yard they share with our flock. The dog was just being a dog. I think I saw another post in this thread where somebody said they killed a neighbor's dog for attacking their chickens!!?? OMG, are there really people that extreme? It's the neighbor's fault for not restraining the dog properly, not the dog's fault. It's in their nature.

I'm sorry, but I just had to air my opinion. I am an animal lover through and through, true blue. I love my chickens, my dogs, my cats, my turtle, my fish, my guinea pig, our snakes, the stray cats that I feed, the stray dogs I see wandering the streets that I pick up and take to animal services or Humane Society or SPCA, even the fruit rats (that my cats occasionally kill, which is a natural behaviour) that visit us from time to time when the fruit is ripe on our trees. You name it and I have a place in my heart for it. Pets are not disposable, especially for displaying natural behaviours. It is the chance we take for having dogs and chickens. Too many pets are disposed of, please do not add to the overwhelming burden of the homeless pets in this country. The whole situation is a total bummer.

I also agree, though, that you should think it through before you getting rid of your dog. One time one of my chicks mysteriously disappeared and I thought it was my dog (it wasn't though). I was so mad at my dog, I wanted to kill her! But after a time I realized that it wasn't really her fault, because it is just instincts. Anyways, I am not saying that you are to blame for what happened. It was just an unfortunate accident.

I am so sorry for your loss.

But I too would rethink rehoming the dog. We are responsible for the chicken, we cant expect our dogs to know better. Just doing what comes natural, chickens are prey for a lot of animals.

I would also rethink about giving the dog up. She is doing what is in her genetics, for thousands of years. She didn't know what she did was wrong.

If you are going to give her away, contact a Border Collie rescue. They should help you out. Also, think of your daughter. Think how upset she will be when you give away her dog.

First and very foremost, I applaud your kindness and cariness to your hen. I am so sorry that she didn't make it. It is a hard thing for children to deal with. They give so much of their love and time to these baby chicks and watch them grow, and then something so bad can happen in a flash. I hope your children are okay and you too for that matter.

No, one the quote above,
I just wanted to say that I still regret killing the neighbors dog, it was not what was meant to happen. First off, we thought it was a stray, it had been ran off away from our chickens several times in the couple of weeks leading to the incident. During this time we lost 17 hens while the dog was roaming through. It had no collar or other identification. My children and myself were also in danger as the dog took off after my 6 and 10 yr old daughters when I tried to shoo him away from all of the dead birds he had killed and the ones trying to get away from him. We fired warning shots 4 to be exact, after we tried to catch and take him into town to the pound. When he took off after my children, he had to be shot to be stopped. We went for an injury shot, but he died anyways. If we would have known where this dog lived for the two weeks my birds were being killed, I would have been glad to speak with the owner about the situation. However, since we live in rural area and have alot of drop offs and overpopulation of strays, and this particular dog having no collar or tags we assumed he was a stray. I am a dog lover, any animal lover for that fact, but dear to dogs. We have 2 a min-pin and a saint bernard who have been and are being trained to not harrass the chickens. And other neighbor hood dogs are also fine. We never had the problem except for the one time. And when the owners of said dog found out why, they completly understood and apologized for not keeping him home. I'm not trying to rant or start a fued, but thought maybe I should explain that we are not evil, and wouldn't have shot the dog to start with had it not charged after my kids. I will lose every bird to a dog if need be; but I will not willingly let my children get injured by an animal. Sorry if this p's anyone off, but just wanted to justify my actions.
