Sorry for your loss.

It really reeks when you lose chicken. If it comes around again, and your able, kill it. It's the only sure way to end such a problem.

Something like this happened to me years ago. A neighbor had a dingo for a pet and had it in a fenced yard with electric run through it-----because the dog had dug under the fence before. Well, apparently the electric fencing had a short in it, and the dingo got out. I and my 3 children (2, 6, and 9) were out shopping for Thanksgiving dinner----this was the day before Thanksgiving. When we got back, it was to the most horrible scene I could imagine-----chickens and ducks laying dead all over my yard. I will never forget having to go around and pick up my beloved pets and the children crying.

That stupid animal had killed all but 2 of my birds----my one-legged B.O., and a young silkie-----they were smart and just sat hiding under some bushes by my front porch. I didn't call animal control, but found out who did it not only because our next-door neighbor saw the dingo leaving, but the ownes actually came and left a note with their phone number. They wanted to replace my chickens with some from an Amish man the husband knew! Right-----these were hand-picked birds from a friend of mine who raises all kinds of breeds and has wonderful birds----not just some run-of-the-mill leghorns. I said, "No, I'll take a cash reimbursement for my birds."-----following advice from the wife's father, they paid me $75 and promised to keep their dingo contained. I never did see that dog again----maybe her dad convinced them it was a liability and they got rid of it.

I think your loss of 2 chickens is just as horrible----you raised and cared for them all this time. They can only pay for the damage, not reimburse you for the trauma and pain. I hope your children quickly forget what happened, and that you get paid for what happened.

Wow.......a tragic story. A dingo is really an animal that is one step from wild and roaming. I didn't know they killed for fun. Most are predators that kill for food. The best way to describe a dingo is umpredictable. I seen them lunge and attack most anything. Including me. The only thing that kept a .380 slug out of that ones head was the owner leash. Almost got away from her.

Are you planning on replacing the hens? Maybe you should see what the Amish fellow has.

I do the same here at 7L but I'm also in the country. The owner next to me sold his land to a developer & they are putting a neighborhood next to me which suxs but I'm telling the neighbors your dog crosses my fence I'm gonna kill it. My farm has been in the family forever but will probably be sold because I don't want neighbors .

Talked to animal control today and they are going to talk to her and if it happens again give her a ticket!! Incredible, I am furious! Would they do the same if they were cats or puppies I wonder. I told her I think of them as pets not egg machines or chicken breasts on my plate.

We don't have guns so shooting is not an option!! I am so upset and sickened! Thanks for all of the replies!!

I knew animal control would not do anything. Around here they will only take the animal if you catch it first. Then they just return it after the fine is paid. Shooting it is good advice but not necessarily sound advice. What state and town do you live in? Better check laws before shooting, they are different in some areas.

Sorry for your loss...An animal like the dingo who took your hens will be back.Even though you haven't seen it for awhile, doesn't mean it's still not around. One thing you need to consider is an animal like that could attack your children as well..! If you don't own guns , nor want to kill the beast, have a friend do it, that is willing and able...An animal like that running loose is nothing but trouble...! Good luck...
