SD was also not given the 'choice' of getting a dog or not; it was suggested to her that now was not a good time to get a dog, and that she should wait until after college. She got the dog anyway.

A 'suggestion'?

That is known in Young Adult Parlance as 'permission', but only if the person is living under your roof. If not it is like flies buzzing around their head.

When she's not living with you, your influence over her decisions is remote at best, and works out to nothing more than 'suggestions'.
