I want to train Fanta to do sighted guide work. I have seen multiple people say dog must have joint x-rays before they can do guide work but they don’t say why exactly they just say it’s stressful on joints

it doesn’t make sense to me!

1. I have heard people say dogs shouldn’t pull when doing guide work (who have actual guide dogs) and people who say they should (most of the time don’t have a guide dog)

2. Not many people do x-rays before doing weight pulling or any dog powered sport. Which I would consider more strenuous then guide work

3. People say harness is the safest thing for dogs that pull and if it doesn’t bother you then you don’t need to train loose leash walking. How is this different to guide work? And this from the same people who say you need the tests before starting guide work

4. Point 3 even includes puppies that pull a lot

5. There is a picture that says dogs most be this amount of your weigh and height for mobility work, these people say “oh thats made be some random person there is no research or facts backing it up“ then don’t post any research or information backing what they are saying


so I am going to train Fanta to do sighted guide work since I don’t want her pulling, unless I can find a point to waiting that makes sense

Unfortunately that means if I post anything on social media showing that people will probably yell at me for being a unethical AD handler

OHHHH darn I didn't have my phone at all when I was training I left it in the house. Ill see if I can get one tonight or tomorrow for sure tho!!

I do enjoy doing it and its also the only way to be apart of the AD community for finding advice, second hand gear, etc. Also if I want to be able to sell any type of thing (dog training, dog gear, getting experience posting for none dog related things) social media is the best way of advertising

I definitely understand that, its both good and bad. I would never have been able to train my own AD without it or probably even found out that I could train one and it would help me. But there are a lot of issues I see with social media
