this is a interesting thing I found on neutering/spaying

I am not sure if I am going to spay any of my dogs, so far I haven’t found any reason to other then convenience
I've thought about spaying my future ones after their first heat like I keep hearing people suggest. Mine have always been spayed and neutered super young, so I have no experience about that except that the people here either spay and neuter immediately or are constantly having puppies and kittens

Best to wait longer then the first heat. 2 years old is the youngest I would consider spaying and I think the most recommended now.

Fanta has still grown after her first and if she had it younger would have grown a huge amount! Twiggy has grown until about 2 years old, not sure if anything is still changing with her

the link I posted has information on issues with spaying young

Misty (10 years old) was only spayed at 8-9. Winnie's still young and I haven't decided yet, I have bred Misty but haven't decided with Winnie yet.
I do think spaying at some point is kinda beneficial, now that Misty is retired from breeding I don't have to worry about accidental litters or Pyometra. The latter been a main concern I have with unspayed girls.

Brewster was just over 2 when he got neutered. I think like 26 months or something. Our last dog was neutered way too young at like 4 months because the vet said he was plenty big enough and he had issues his whole life because of it and ended up being put down at 6 1/2. I’m not sure if his disease was related but I believe it could have been. So I will never fix early again. Even waiting till 1 year is better than doing it super young. But yeah. I will always wait till at least 2 now.

So... if I understand correctly, which it's very possible that I messed something up:

Males, it's safest to be intact (minus risk of puppies), safer to have a vasectomy and then monitor every two years for tumors, and somewhat safe to neuter after a certain age

Females, its safest to leave intact (minus risk of puppies), somewhat safer to do a hysterectomy if you must and monitor them, and then a little safe to spay after 2?

Hmm. I neutered my male Golden before 6 months old, he lived a long healthy life to the age of 15. I had my female Sheltie spayed before her first heat and she lived a healthy life until age 13 when I had to have her put down due to arthritis. I believe those are pretty much average ages for those breeds. I don't think they would have lived much longer if they had been intact, although Gracie may have lasted a little longer if we lived in a ranch style home rather than one with steep stairs.
