Dog training methods

I own a Working Line GSD who I fully trained off-leash. I used (and still use) a balanced method of training. That means I punish deliberate mistakes and reward success. I think doing "Positive Only" or "Old School" is ridiculous. Dogs need to be informed when they are doing something right, and when they are doing something wrong; anything else is cruel to the dog. I also don't think you can get the same level of reliability using positive only that you can being balanced.

Yes!!❤
I also have a fully off leash trained dog that I trained with positive reinforcement and correction.

I do use treats but they arent pulled out until they do the trick or whats asked then they are rewarded . It took months with setbacks to get Tucker to many commands without treats but he was happy. The clicker is a mark word for when doing distance training. Mine know sit, stay, come, heel and a few other commands without needing treats. Off leash rhey know that pretty well but thats where the e collar comes in. If they run off or dont listen they know they go back on a leash, so taking away their freedom because they didnt listen. I will not yell at or hit my dogs. Thats not right. My dogs have a relationship with me. And with a fearful reactive dog negative training wont always help. I ve watched scared shutdown dogs be mistreated and wont do that. Chained outside in the negative temps and hot temps because dog after dog didnt get trained. Peed in the house. And they get food maybe 2 times a week. Its horrible. And nothing can be done about it, ive tried.

Completely true, yes. ❤

Our local humane society has so many formerly abused dogs. It's so sad to see. 🥺

At our old house the people across the road abused and neglected their dogs. call after call nothing could be done. Then we moved. Poor pups will live that way the rest of their lives because that county could care less about animals.

That's cool that you use an e collar, so many people think it's terrible, but it's a tool that can be used correctly and for the dog's own good!
One of my favorite dog trainers, Miles Hamilton, uses e collars, and has really good YouTube videos.

Here's an example of a negative reinforcer. I wish there was another name for it, people hear "negative" and just shut down. They don't understand it. It's not abuse.

Jenny, my Golden, recently started licking me. I get it, she wants to be petted, and she'd had a pretty sparse life until we got her (she was a breeder until she was almost three, no socialization or interaction, just in a kennel all her life) and suddenly now she's part of a family and being loved on, room to run and so forth, and she blossoms and now she wants to SHOW affection and this is the only way she knows to do it ... but, I don't want to be licked! So what do I do? I don't want to yell at her and absolutely am not going to slap her or anything like that ... so I blow in her face, gently, while I keep petting her. PUFF! She doesn't like that very much, just like I don't like being licked, but I'm still petting her, so she knows I'm not mad at her, and as soon as she quits licking, I quit blowing. Just a quick little PUFF! Every time she licks. It doesn't take her long to make the connection. Now she comes up to be petted and her tongue may flick out but she remembers and turns her head away from me, and I pet and stroke her and tell her how wonderful she is. She wants to avoid the PUFF so she doesn't lick any more. That was my "negative reinforcer," my little correction to get her to stop licking.

That's a really good example!
