I got told negative reinforcement is wrong no matter what why I twist it, because it's painful. Like no it's not!! What if someone asked you to walk in a straight line, but you didn't understand, so they took you by the arm and led you in a straight line so you could understand and succeed. That's not mean- they helped you!

“Oh I don’t use treat training because I don’t want to carry treats around, or if I don’t have treats, the dog won’t come to me,”

I’m not sure why people assume they have to continue using treats or clickers to train. It’s a quick way to convey the correct message to a dog, it’s not a requisite to have a treat or clicker after the dog has learned the action.

That should be true. But by GC (granddaughter, I call her my Girl Child, she's 23 and has lived with me since she was 10) has been taking her 10-mo Aussie to training sessions at PetSmart, and he will only sit for a treat. If she does not have any (he knows by his nose), he will just stand there looking at her, his little stubby tail going like a helicopter, the look on his face clearly saying, "you're not playing by the rules, mom!"

But ... not judging people who do use treats. Or clickers. Whatever works! Dogs are not just smart, they are spooky smart. There are a bazillion ways to train and some dogs get trained by people who have no idea how or when they did it.
