Dog won't stop licking

We have been on well water for years, we love the taste. But we do have a higher iron content then the county water. Fortunately we are not iron sensitive. I doubt it is your water it just sounds very much like stress.

Often these itching problems are food-based. Corn and Wheat are not natural foods for dogs, but are usually the primary ingredients in store-bought kibble

One of my dogs is allergic to flea bites so frontline is always at hand. my neighbor had a depressed lab and she would exact same thing as your dane and they put her on doggy prozac or some equivalent. stop the licking and get that spot healed up perhaps once she is less stressed it might settle down. I still think vigirous regular excercise will help. I have a jack and a tired jack is a good jack!!

Oh yea she gets PLENTY of excersise. She gets turned out MANY times everyday. If I don't turn her out she is bouncing off the walls. I took her in to our vet this morning and he suggested that I put her on some meds to help calm her. Plus he suggested getting her a smoked bone to chew to keep her busy. So far with the meds and the bone she isn't paying much attention to her leg. He did a skin scrape and it was negative for everything. So now he too thinks it is maybe stress and possibly a new food allergy. He is going to see how this treatment works and if it doesn't he will put her on allergy meds. We are going to keep trying until we find something that works.

Nothing like a good bone to take your mind off of things!! I actually hope its stress and not allergies, they are costly to diagnose and treat. Corn, wheat and a lot of the preservatives in dog food are often the culprits.

Rasha is a great dane and she was 8 in aug.2008, last couple weeks I noticed her licking her front feet before going to bed and since her bed is behind my P/C desk, she has been driving me nuts with her licking. So know what your going thru. will try some of the recommendations myself, but she hasn't had any thing to cause stress. about all she does is eat and sleep, she does go out to potty, but with it cold and snowing she is back in VERY quickly, I think her age is one thing getting to her.

Maybe your house is very dry and she is getting itchy spots from that? Just a guess because we use wood heat to supplement our heat pump and it gets VERY dry in our house.
