Taking my one of my three dogs in to the Vet's on Wednessday to get a skin scraping and I am suspecting some type of mite infestation. I'm not planning on shelling out oodles of cash to treat with Mitaban Dip (amitraz) at 50 dollars per 10 oz. With three 55-80 pound dogs to be treated that will run into the several 100s of dollars. We should already have them covered for sacrophytic mange as they get Heartguard+(generic monthly) and K9 Advantix every 2 months the Advantix is a therapeutic treatment and preventative for it.

My question is Prolate/Linatox-HD(for cattle/pigs) has been reported by several users to be inexpensive in treating their dogs safely and effectively. Others are reporting good success with Happy Jack Mange Medicine as well. Honestly, I am inclined to go with a lifetime supply of the Prolate/Linatox-HD for around 20 dollars. It isn't that I am cheap my vet is expensive as all get out and I am tired of spending $2-300 every other month or so on their maintenance.

Does anyone use and trust the generic Paramite dip?

Looking for input from the usual suspects, @Blooie @lazy gardener @Farmer Connie @penny1960 @aart I wont know if I have an issue until I visit the vet but my animals are getting regularly dosed with the ivermectin(monthly) via the heartguard also K9 advantix II(no ivermectin here) I mght need to switch out to the K9 multi(really only adds an antihelmetic(dewormer)). Yes I realize you aren't vetrenarians so I'm not expecting advice on that level. I'll be seeing mine in 2 days time. Just curious if any of you have used Paramite dip in the past off label for your dogs.

edit---
K9 Advantix II:
  • REPELS & KILLS mosquitoes, which can carry heartworm disease
  • Prescription-free topical REPELS & KILLS ticks
  • REPELS & KILLS all life stages of fleas - prevents eggs, larvae, and pupa from developing
  • REPELS biting flies and KILLS chewing lice
  • Prescription-free topical kills fleas, ticks, lice and mosquitoes

Not me.. we have been using Advanix for the longest time. I wish I could be more helpful.
I'm following your post to see what your vet says in a couple days.:pop

Well I found a cheap replacement for the heartguard medication, presently I am going through 36 doses per year so $75-x3, My only real concern is regarding the heartworms as my animals aren't exposed to much else in the way of strange animals or strays. This vet is suggesting buying Ivermectin for sheep and adding it to anything your dog will scarf up. For me that will be a peanut butter bread drop. a 50ml vial would cover my girls for 100+doses well beyond the 3 year shelf life. here is a link:
https://pethelpful.com/dogs/Heartworm-Preventative-for-Your-Dog-for-Less-Than-10-Dollars-a-Year his amazon link to the ivermectin inj for making your own heartworm pills is $22.95 a significant savings over my current $225/yearly bill.

Crossed my wires here the 50ml vial was for the cattle 1% ivermectin, so that would make many hundreds more doses of heartworm medication. Since ivermectin is sold at 1%, or 10mg/cc, a 20 kg dog needs less than 0.05cc

If you think you are dealing with Demodectic mange (some folks call if Red Mange), amitraz has always been the dip of choice. Amitraz was originally a swine dip and when sold by the quart for swine it is amazingly cheap. So the challenge now days is to find a supplier that sells this product for swine. And if you do dip your dogs, be sure to protect your skin at all costs. And remember Demodectic mange happens due a quirk of the dog's immune system. Many dogs will have the mites with no issue. (Humans have their own version of the demodex mite in their eyebrows). Other dogs who immune systems are out of whack will overreact to the presence of the mite. Kinda like a flea allergy. Good luck.

I would wait until you get the results from the skin scraping unless you're absolutely sure of diagnosis before you try this paramite stuff. Have you seen any fleas on your dog? Am I reading correctly that they are only getting flea preventative every 2 months versus every month? If that is true, it could be as simple as flea meds every month. I wouldn't rule out sarcoptic mange (think that's what you meant?) until you get a clear skin scraping. Good luck!
