Dominique Thread!

Here's my little Dom (Bubbles) - 12 wks old today. She's so sweet & loves to be picked up.
Her buddy is a Sebright. They do EVERYTHING together.

0f course when I tried to get a close up, they became a little too interested in my camera. lol

I'd like to introduce to you Hank Wllieggs, Sr. He was my Mystery Chick this June from Murray MacMurray Hatchery. So he's about 18 weeks old now, but this pic was taken a couple of weeks ago. I'm thrilled to have him. He's crowing already and it's the cutest little crow ever!!
I'm liking this breed a lot. This is my second year raising chickens and I'm thinking I'll be getting some more Dominiues in my next order for sure!! I started out loving the feather footed breeds, and absolutely love Langshans. But of the non-feather footed breeds, I'm thinking of sticking to Easter Eggers and Dominiques.
I can't wait to get some more Dominiques, and if anyone has any HATCHING EGGS of better than hatchery quality eggs they'd be willing to sell/ship, please let me know, as I'd love to hatch my own!
Thank you! And I hope you like Hank as much as I do. I can't wait to see him fully feathered as he shows signs of having beautiful saddle and hackle feathers.
Bubbles thinks Hank is a handsome guy.

He loves to be handled. Whenever Im sitting he settles in for a nap :)

I don't snuggle my roosters (not me, but also I worry that too much "touchy feely" time with the roosters might make them more aggressive).

However... Whatever.. (Above was really a public service announcement  )

I really like my rooster... He is a perfect gentleman.. He always calls the ladies over when he has a treat, and even though I just totally abused him and all his hens twice, about a week apart (treating for lice) he still hasn't gotten mad at me or my kids.

My youngest misbehaved today, so had to go clean poop trays, he needs a ladder or tall stool to reach the trays (so still little) and I never have to worry about him!

I love that!

Alaskan, I would be happy to have a rooster like yours and just tolerates being handled and I don't have to worry about him attacking us. Having him snooze on us would be a bonus. I'm guessing the one above may grow out of that....
We had a sweet EE roo that would jump into our arms when we opened the brooder. As he got older, he was still the 1st to greet us, but was more interested in treats. He even tolerated my daughter playing dress up. He never challenged. (Occasionally stopped in front of us to hold ground until we got near, then moved aside to avoid getting stepped on.) He was still sweet at 14 mo, but he crowed all the time & mated all 10 hens bald. For those reasons we gave him away. Still miss him, but the hens were happy when he left.

We also had an unpredictable roo. He was great with the hens & OK with us most of the time, but i didn't fully trust him. When my mom passed I needed the kids to care for the flock & decided to send him away to freezer camp. I hope one of the roos we're growing out stays nice. They're 6 mo old & so far no signs of aggression.

If you keep up snuggling, I bet he'll stay a cuddle bug. We have 3 Dominique roosters who are right at the 2 year old mark and one of them has wanted to be held since he was in the brooder. His name us Zeb and whenever we open the door to walk outside, he hears it and come running to us. If you open your arms to invite him up, he eagerly flies up into your arms, snuggles down, and stays there happily until you put him down (sometimes half an hour later). The other two roosters are friendly and want to be near you, but they don't have the same desire to be held. If you have a Dominique with a snuggly personality, cultivate it, and you'll keep yourself a lapdog - I mean lap chicken!
