Dominique Thread!

If it had been Speckeled Sussex over Dominique hens, then the chicks would have been sex-linked....

The other way, with the rooster being Dominique, all of the chicks will look Dominique.

Here is the calculator website, if you want to try it yourself.

I am not possitive what color Sussex count as, so I tried a couple of possibles.

All spangles, mottles (the spots), whatever they are genetically, are recessive, so will not show up.

What about laced birds? is lacing a recessive trait?

I am thinking of keeping a pair of silver laced orps. If a laced roo mates with a solid hen (or vice versa) what's the possible outcome?

Is it a case where, the offspring would have to be bred back to the parent to see lacing again?

These are the 4 chicks out of a dom rooster. The mothers are dom hens and there may be some with a speckled Sussex mom. Anyone able to tell which may be which? Or if the head spots give anything away about the sexing?

Lost my battle trying to raise a couple of Blue Breda and taking a break from getting more for now. I love Breda because they are so much like Dom in temperament. Since I lost the two Breda pullets by 6-months (rare breed to raise), I scrambled to Wes's Pets & Feed to order 3 Dom chicks. They are not from Cackle which I'd prefer but these are from Privett Hatchery -- I was in a rush to get started raising some layers and Wes's is the only local source for immediate Doms. The baby Doms are constantly trilling. It is so hot in the 100's I'm not using a heat lamp. They love sleeping next to the teddy bear at night after I cover w/ a towel over the top netting. I forgot how teeny tiny Dom chicks are compared to BR chicks. They don't know what to do w/ all the room in the kiddie pool brooder but I know they'll outgrow it fast!

They're very cute.

I like your kiddie pool brooder! Fun & functional. We use a Peck-N-Play. (Brooder made from a used infant playpen.)

I also happen to have chicks hatching this weekend. DH took his mom to a nephew's wedding. We did not have the finances for all of us to go & DH was needed to transport his mom. Because the kids & I are stuck at home, we decided to celebrate in our own way.

Some people release doves at weddings, so instead we 're releasing baby chicks from their shells. LOL The wedding is tomorrow, but a few early birds hatched ahead of schedule. I know the kids would have preferred to go to Florida, but chicks are a fun way to celebrate.

The 1st to hatch was a female = named after the bride & the 2nd was a male, so named after our nephew. (We made some sex-linked orps using the choc gene.) We also hatch our Dom eggs (fertilized by our orp roo), because they also produce sex-linked chicks.
