Didn't he orginally get them from Ideal, but has been working on them for awhile ?

Oh, and by true I suppose he means true to Standard.

We have some scrawny hatchery hens - they have split combs and are just so tiny - they are the opposite of what the standard indicates on all levels...

Bob's birds seem to be heavier and have better overall color, making them closer to the standard than hatchery birds. In my opinion

p.s. Centrarchid - I just checked out your web site - what an interesting job you have!!! That's a great field of study.

Since we're talking about where to order Dominiques, Purely Poultry certainly has a nice looking bird on their site. Look at the slope of this boy's back! Per the standard, you should be able to draw a parallel line from the top of the tail to the bottom of the wattles. This guy looks to have that. What do ya'll think? Does anyone have pics of Doms from there they can share?

Thanks Gallusfarm,

I have as part of my founding stock, birds from Ideal. They repressent an extreme in terms of appearance that will be be incorporated into my strain. Of the stocks I am bringing in, they seem to have clearest sign of barred plymouth rock in background. They are also lighter in weight than some of my show stocks which will pull average down I hope.

My job is more fun than average. The work has a lot in common with operating a dairy farm as well as being wildlife biologist and engineer. Get to teach a lot too.

Below are some pics of my Dominiques (I have 3 hens and 1 roo). I'm new to chickens and got mine from a local breeder and wasn't aware of the breed standard at that time. My interest in the breed was due to their Heritage Breed status and rich history. I've since learned that they are very hardy, so curious and independent and good layers. If I ever decide to breed a few more for my small backyard flock I am sure I have lots to work on! Mr. Rue lost his big tail feather from a predator that almost got him
