Great info!! I was referred to Sam Isham in San Antonio, but he had nothing available at that time. I may try to contact the Farthings. The latest eggs sent by my brother are all clear!! I would like to see if his roo will do any better here at my place....worth a shot, I think!!

I have 3 roosters to choose from my out-crosses.. One has rustiness on his wings, good shape, decent tail, comb a bit rough, but nice spike,.

Two has smoother comb, similar spike, no rustiness, similar shape, stringier, lighter colored tail.

Three has down-turned spike(from my out-cross) good color, stockier build, good shape, and decent tail.

Sorry I don't have any pics where I can post them.......I think I am talking the lesser of three evils here, but would you pick one over the other? I have pulled the hens that are obviously Three's sisters. They have the same comb.

Earlier in this thread I read that Doniniques weren't super broody. I read, somewhere, that they were?

The broodiness of Dominiques has been bred out a bit from influence of more industrialized breeds. I think it just really depends on the strain you're working with. Some strains seem to be much more broody than others, that's all we can conclude

. If you want broodiness, this actually comes from the sire's line, so take your broody hen, find her sire, breed him with another nice hen, then cross that cockerel (half brother to the broodies) onto his half sisters.

Egg production rate versus egg coloration.

Many, including myself, suspect egg production of at least some hatchery stocks of dominique has been enhanced by outcrossing with barred plymouth rocks, hence the observed darker eggs of such flocks. I wonder if the light brown egg producing birds simply do not produce as well and selection for more eggs in itself promoted darker brown coloration without introducing BR as the characteristics might be linked.

My broody (Rosemary) just hatched out some of her chicks! She was sitting on 16-18 eggs and we've got at least four hatched so far! This was her first time going broody (she's not even a year old yet) and she is being a very good and concerned mama so far.

I'm so excited and couldn't help but post this to all my fellow Dominique fanciers out there!!

Although I don't think my other two chickens would do any harm, I've separated the biddies from the rest of the flock for now just to be safe. They have a dog crate with an attached mini run that is built onto the main run (so they can see the other chickens but are physically separated).
