Dominique Thread!

Wow, I'm so happy to find a whole thread about Doms! I'm going to have to read it all. We got one Dominique in our mixed flock of 8 hens this year and she is absolutely our favorite girl. It's made me read lots more about them and I'm thinking of trying my hand at breeding some. What fun!

Back to reading now ...

Hi Centrachid,

More and more, this is what I'm thinking of doing! It may be a year or two before I can dive fully into it, as we'd need to build more facilities (all I have right now is a 6x6 coop), but we have the space to work with so I'm going to keep reading and learn as much as I can. But I really like the idea of breeding some Doms.

I'm glad I found this thread I love Dominiques I have a small breeding flock of them my Roosters are from Sol's poultry yard and my hens are from my fathers bloodlines he raised them along with Australorps for many years. Every generation seems to be better then the last and I am hoing the new roosters I added will help them even more

Once you are setup with holding facilties, get some good birds from more than one source. Have some fun reading up and talking with others keeping doms. Try to link up with those raising for meat and eggs as well as those interested in breeding for show.

I recently ordered 11 chicks from www.mypetchicken.com because they will send less than 25. They all arrived healthy and happy and alive and they had a heater in the center of their box--thank heaven. I got three Australorp hens, three Buf Orpington hens, 1 Buf Orpington Roo, 2 Light Brahma hens, and 2 Dominiques. They are all adorable, but the Dominiques are the cutest and friendliest of all of them. I am loving those two little girls so much and am happy to have found this Dominique thread. I have two Barred Rock hens that are 2 years old, so these will fit right in next spring when they're old enough to merge with the larger flock. Anyhow, just wanted to say that these have become my fave chicks (they're only 3 weeks old right now)

Regarding whether the little Dominique chick is a roo or a hen, what i've been told is that you can tell by their wing feathers. And definitely held true when I look at my tiny chicks right now. The one roo has short squarish wing feathers and all the hens have long curving wing feathers. Why not check there for your little Dominique?

You are describing feather sexing. In all instances of dominiques being feather sexable, the birds are not pure dominique. Those I have had appear to have been part barred Plymouth Rock.

Hi Jim,

Do you have recommendations for good sources of quality Dominique stock? I'm seeing a few names pop up repeatedly in my readings, so that's good. Just today I sent in dues to join the Dominique Club, hopefully I can learn some things through them. Thanks for your encouragement!

My mixed flock came from mypetchicken, too. I bought from them for the same reason as you, I really only wanted 8 hens total. Anyway, my one Dominique is my favorite of the bunch just like yours. She's what got me interested in the breed in the first place. Anyway, I've been reading a lot about the breed standard, and from what I can tell my girl is not a great example of the breed in terms of conformation (except maybe her comb - she has a lovely comb). But she's got the temperment and foraging ability that seem to be characteristic of Dominques, and she's been a good layer so far. So I don't know where mypetchicken got their Dom stock, but they sure are sweeties.
