Ok I have finally broken down and decided to give my ailing chick some antibiotics as she is doing far worse than my older hen, both of whom are having some respiratory issues. Not knowing exactly what it is they have, I didn't wanna jump on the antibiotic bandwagon, but she is not showing much improvement. I have looked for Tylan 50, but no one in this area carries it. I found some injectable oxytetracycline, and I am really hoping that #1 this is safe to give to my chickens, and #2 that someone can help me with dosage!!

It needs to be given intramuscularly so I am assuming i will give this in the breast? My one chick who is the sickest is only a few weeks old. I also have sav-a-chick probiotics to give with this.

This is the chick I am most worried about, but I am also going to inject the hen as well. Can yall help me in finding the proper dosage??

I have called all the feed stores and NO ONE knows of any vets around here that deal with chickens. Had the same problem trying to find a vet for my bunny.

I've only used the terra vet 200 which is oxytetracycline. If it's the same I gave my regular size hen one half ml or cc. For seven days straight alternating each side of breast. One side one day and the other side the next. Be sure to rub where the injection is. It can make them sore. Keep us posted.

The dose as shown on the box works out to 20mg/kg which looks like this

5 pound hen
5 / 2.2 x 20 / 300 = 0.15ml

100 gram chick
.1 x 20 / 300 = 0.006 ml

I think that there is no safe way to treat the chick with it.

How much did the hens you treated weigh? Let me know and I'll calculate the 300 number based on what you gave.

Thanks everyone, the baby had passed away when I got home.... I live in Texas, is there anywhere I can send the body for a necropsy, and if so where do I find that info? Do I toss the body in the freezer until I can find out? Sorry never had to deal with anything like this before.

I did not trust my math haha but I was figuring .15 ml. I wish I had gotten smaller syringes.

Thanks so much for all the help on dosage.... I am going to give her a shot after I make all my rounds tonight so that she is the last one I deal with before my shower. The sick chick was in a cage with about 20 other babies that are only a week old, none of which have gotten ill yet..... should I go ahead and bleach that entire cage and put them back in it or is it too late for that? It is a wire rabbit cage, so I guess I'll have to use a spray bottle and spray bleach on it. My hen that was sick was in a totally different pen, and none of the others in there are showing any signs either. One of my silkies in yet another pen looked like he might be getting something too, but it has not progressed anymore and he is not raspy or breathing heavily.

I had let the larger babies out into a smaller pen one day to scratch around in the grass, is there any way to treat the ground in that area so that no one else gets it? It is a small part of my back yard I had sectioned off specifically for the babies to run around in on the weekends instead of being cooped up in a cage 24/7. I probably should not have, but all my babies I was placing together in one brooder. I got them from 2 different places but they were day old chicks and I was thinking surely they wouldnt be carrying anything but I should have known better than that.

I am wondering if I should just consider myself lucky and cull the hen that is sick right now, as she is in isolation and I am nervous about placing her back with everyone else once she gets better.

I just do not know what to do, but this is stressin me out!!

I found dose for pheasants and it was listed as 43mg/kg, so for a five pound hen that's 0.32ml and for a100 gram chick it's 0.014ml.

hmmmmm.... so shall I do 0.15 or the 0.32?? I don't want to give too much?? Or will it hurt? The chick has passed, so unfortunately no injection for her. Should i inject the hen once a day for 7 days or twice a day? Thank you so much for your awesome math, I totally fail at that stuff!
