Dosage for Oxytetracycline???? **NEW VIDEOS OF SICK CHICKENS ADDED PLEASE HELP**

Quote: One teaspoon of that weighs about 3 grams and there are 55mg oxytetracyline per gram, so it's 3 grams x 55mg x 2 teaspoons = 330mg per two teaspoons. I think the instructions say to use between 200mg and 800mg per gallon. If you want to use the max dose, it's 5 teaspoons.

This is from a thread I started:

Package weighs 181.5 grams and has 10 grams oxytetracycline.
10 ÷ 181.5 = 0.055, which means it's 5.5% oxytetracycline, 94.5% filler
One gram = 55mg
One teaspoon weighs about 3 grams which = 165mg x 5 teaspoons = 825 mg
The 800 mg dose for one gallon = 5 teaspoons (825mg is close enough)

Not positive, but I think it's supposed to be made fresh daily. -Kathy

I could probably mail some Baytril tablets to you if you want to try them. Of course I would just give them to you.

. But I guess it really couldn't hurt anything, other than we couldnt really eat her eggs? Not that she is laying any right now lol.... or anyone else for that matter. We just started getting 6 or 7 eggs a day (we have 8 hens) and now we are getting one, from one of my little banty hens. So really that is like a half an egg.

The hen in question still seems to be doing good, slow recovery but she is doing good, perked up some, moving around more, making little chicken noises. She has been eating very well, a lot of improvement on the appetite. Still very congested sounding. The smaller chick (exact same breed and age as the one that died) still seems to be doing good. I have her in a rubbermaid tub in the bathroom next to the hen, who is in a wire cage. I have a board across the top of the rubbermaid to hold a light for warmth and she hangs out perched on this board most of the time. I figure she must feel good enough to be able to jump up and down from there at will, but bad enough that she does not try to escape. I even have the bathroom door open and not once has she hopped down and tried to explore. her face seems a little puffy under the nostrils. Nose is still a little runny, but she still does not have a hard time breathing like the other one did. Both of them have clear eyes. It all seems strictly respiratory. No swollen joints etc. All the other chickens out in the chicken yard are still rocking along just fine, some still act a little under the weather, but they are all still active.

I don't really know what to do with them once they get better, but I guess everyone has already been exposed to their crud. Do you think it would be alright to put them back with their respective cagemates after they are better? The little chick makes me the most nervous since she is in the cage with all the little babies and I do not want any of them to get sick!

I read somewhere that if exposed to some diseases as chicks, it can alter their reproductive organs causing them to not lay as well as adults, so I am a little worried about that. Not that I am super worried about production, but the idea was that they would at least kinda sorta earn their keep by selling their eggs. I really wish we had a vet around here that could deal with this stuff just so that I could at least figure out what is going on and stop this guessing game, the uncertainty is driving me nutty!

@MESOFRUFFEH , I think Texas A & M has four labs and I think you could have one of them draw blood and run a respiratory disease panel. Try calling your state vet and ask them. Some states have grants in place and might be willing to waive the costs.

Seems most of the labs are closed, at least the one closest to me is, as the number is disconnected. I will have to call back the one in college station and see if they can give me any more information. Not sure when I could could go other than on the weekend, college station is about 3.5 hours away, which isn't bad, depends on what time they close... I know the guy said they do necropsy on saturday, so I am assuming they are open. I am at work now, but later when I get a few minutes I will call and ask them if they can do that, and I could possibly make a trip down there this weekend. Thanks so much yet again!!

Here's a story for everyone to read.

She starts by treating with tetracycline in October, then Tylan. Neither worked, so I sent her some tablets in Decenber. If you have time, read it.

Well, I made it to about page 25. i might go back and read some more later!! It was starting to hurt my brain lol!!

I am just really unimpressed with the way my hen is recovering. She has not gotten any worse, but really still not much better. monday will be two weeks of this, and I have never had an animal be that sick for so long without more improvement. I know its only been 2ish weeks, but I'm starting to feel like I'm fighting a losing battle. Also starting to think I might need to set up some sort of outdoor hospital....especially if this is going to keep going on.... it is so hard to deal with the cramped quarters in that bathroom. Do you think there is any reason why my standard breed chickens have all gotten ill, but the bantams are totally fine? My bantams are the only ones still laying.

Also, let me tell you a little story.

A couple months back, my sister and her boyfriend asked me if I wanted this rooster they had. Since I have only a bantam rooster, I said heck yeah I want him. Having never really quarantined in the past (yes, I have learned my lesson now, a very valuable lesson, one I will remember for the rest of my days, and a lesson I will share with everyone who cares to listen), I said I guess just go toss him out there with the rest, they will sort themselves out (I was cooking dinner and it was after dark). I did not lay eyes on the chicken until the next morning. I went out there and turned out to be a hen, skin and bones, looked to have fowl pox (I did not know that is what it was until way later when I saw it on my other chickens, then read about it here, i just thought they were scabs) Had a bad limp (still does, no idea why, leg & foot looks good). Acting very sickly. Immediately removed her from the pen, and put her far away in the back yard by herself to receive some TLC.

A week or two later, looked like the others had acquired her fowl pox, my sick hen I'm treating now was the first one I noticed it on. Shortly after this, my bantam hen, PJ's, got stepped on by a cow & broke her leg and she went to the back yard with "Lucysaurus Rex" the sickly hen from my sister. PJ's has never had any issue, no fowl pox, no respiratory issues, nothing. Healthy as a horse. Aside from the jacked up leg..... The more I think about it the more it nags at me that maybe Lucy brought more than just fowl pox. (They told me all the other chickens they had died, but that they thought the dogs killed them .... my sisters BF had moved and left the chickens at his families house, so I guess he isnt exactly sure what killed them, but Im starting ti think some sort of illness, not dogs.) But if she did bring some crud with her, wouldn't PJs also be sick? Why would everyone just now be getting ill a couple months later? Lucy was in their pen less than 12 hours, I know thats enough to transmit stuff, especially since they got fowl pox from her, and things spread by poop too, but why would they just now be getting something else? ANything with an incubation period that long? Maybe my sick hen has a crappy immune system and thats why she was the first one to get the pox and the first one to get this crud and have it the worst? I wish I could go back in time several months and do all of this over again. I would have put Lucy in a cage all by herself far far away from the others and nursed her back to health from the get-go.

I really wish I had some answers!! So frustrating and I feel so hopeless AND helpless!!

We have another victim of the crud.... Been watching this one for the last day or two, been acting a little off.... The barred rock looking chick.... Will follow up with another Video, doing this from my phone
