Dreams of hatching... and THEY ARE!!!! page 7 pic heavy

Doctor's office can't see DD. Overbooked already. Advised me to take her to a walk in clinic. Their office is closed tomorrow. Sheesh. I'm not really happy about this!!!

Our old doctor isn't available but his PA is. So I'll take her in and see what he has to say. She is NOT happy about getting up and moving around...

Another SSH has barely pipped. The Blue Orp that was pipped last night has it's wing out. That makes 2 of them in a row that hatched wing first. The 3rd Blue is still just pipped.
the humidity is staying between 69-70. But the Blue Orp membranes are awfully dry. Maybe because she's been pipped for so long? She started this at 4:45pm last night.

Think I'll leave the newly hatched where they are, along with Lil Bit. I'll worry about chaging things around when I get home with DD.

Yeah for more chickies

Oh, but that is too bad about your DD

We thought it was either a wrong egg, or someone jumped the fence. He's quite a perky little guy. My DH laughs every time he looks at him. He's certainly different! Youngest DD thinks he's adorable. Oldest DD heard us call him 'the ostrich chick' and got all excited, thinking we'd hatched an actual ostrich

She's the one trying to get me to buy emu eggs...

Youngest has bronchitus and probably a touch of pneumonia as well. Z-pack and meds, plus rest. No school tomorrow since she's still running a fever and could be contagious. I have a Z-pack for me as well, I just have to wait until I crash and burn to use it...

We have 10 chicks in the brooder:
2 Blue Orps (both of which hatched wing first before exploding from the shell)
5 normal Ameracaunas
1 Naked Neck Ameracauna
1 Silver Spangled Hamburg
1 White Silkie (lil bit)

Weirdly enough, Lil Bit seems to be going to survive, but her little sister is dying. All her intestines came out and are dangling from her bottom. It's not a pretty sight. And even if were to cram them all into her again I don't know that she could survive and I don't want to torture her. I can't bring myself to put her down yet, either. Makes me sad. Guess I'll do the deed later this afternoon.

Lil bit has messed up feet where toes didn't completely form. I'm going to have to research whether these things are genetic of due to improper batoring. I know the stickiness of them is bator-related....

We have pips in a Blue Orp egg and a SSH egg. I've seen definite signs of life in 2 other eggs. 6 more eggs are staying put because I can't see into them well enough to be sure what's going on in there. Cassie's mutt is definitely a dead egg. I see sloshing in there...

Very mixed bag of happy, sad, worried, stressed kind of day. Focusing on the happy: 10 lively chicks!! Will take pics this evening when everyone is fluffier.

Congratulations on your assortment!!!!!!

Great job!!!!!

That's so funny about the blue orps hatching with the wing first and then exploding out of the egg. WOW!!!!! That's awesome to have 2 hatch by theirselves.

I'm sorry about Lil Bit's sister. Are you sure there isn't a way to put it back in there. I'm so sorry!!!! Please keep us posted.

Yay!!! For Lil Bit!!!!!!

I hope the Z pack kicks in and that dd is feeling better very soon.

Yeah, I'm going to read up on what happened and then see how she looks when I get home (came to work for a bit).
I think if I'd been home when they started falling out I could've (and would've) tried to stop the process and put things back. But by the time we got back from the doctor she was looking pretty rough. And I had to choose between getting a few things done at work for next week and staying home tomorrow, or staying home today and being at work tomorrow...

DD comes first, so I came to work. Tomorrow will be a rough day as the antibiotics kick in and that crud in her chest starts moving around. I want to be there for her. She's okay this afternoon, alone for 3 hours until her sister gets there. But the Z-pack will kick in tonight and tomorrow I expect will be awful. Hours spent in a steamy bathroom helping her breathe. So I'm going to get my shipping paperwork done for next week and have a long weekend.

This may sound mean, but I feel like if the Silkie is bad off now she may always be bad off (assuming I could even fix her). And a weak bird is more susceptible to minor contagions and liable to pass them on.
I don't have those concerns for Lil Bit, since she almost had this same problem and has healed up some on her own. But the little sis is way bad off and will never be quite right. Maybe
I really should've put her down already but I just kept thinking 'maybe I'm not seeing what I think I'm seeing, maybe I'm wrong.' And maybe I am. Maybe this is major meconium/yolk mixed with a little blood that is hung up like pasty butt. Maybe I should've tried to pull it out.
And then I thought "Go to work and see what Mother Nature does next." And I hope it was a good choice

Well give us updates when you get home. I know that is a tough call about Lil Bit's sis. Who knows, maybe it will perk up like Lil Bit did.

It's not an easy decision. I've been there before. It's very hard.

That's good you were able to get a little work in, so you can be there for dd tomorrow while she is sick. I hope she feel better soon.

I'm about to put the eggs in. Yahooo!!!! The TX7 has been holding like a dream. I'm really excited to try it out and I really want these eggs to develope. The parents are absolutely gorgeous.

Well, about this time tomorrw I'll be on an airplane, but I'm taking my laptop with me. I always do, so dd can watch movies or play computer games. Maybe there will be internet service there.

Good luck with the prima donna Blue Orp.

I'll check back in later for more updates.

WOW!!! Is this day 2 or 3....I've lost track.

This is actually day 3 of the hatching saga. And the bator has been veeeery quiet for a while. Maybe no more survivors, but I saw veins & movement in 2 that are left so maybe they are just taking their time.

Good news, part one: 3rd Blue Orp hatched on her own and is a gorgeous silvery blue!!

Please let her be a girl because she will be a BEAUTY!

Bad news, part one: Second Silver Spangled Hamburg zipped 1/3 of the way and then died. I didn't shell him to see why. Decided he was just too fragile. From the timr he pipped until the time he died was less than 5 hours! And he was stiff already when I found him. ~sigh~ I really wanted more banties...

Good news part two: DH said, "Honey, we're not going to do this again right away, right?"
I said, "Define 'right away'..."
He said, "Well, don't do so many all at once next time, okay?"
I said, "I'll think about." And I was. Because I have 3 dozen eggs on order for 4/28

Bad news, part two: #2 white Silkie was definitely not built to survive. I tried to be as humane as possible. Talked to her first and cuddled her. Cried a little as she left her broken body behind. DH later said, "Honey, I'd have done that for you." But they are my project and my responsibility.

So I have 1 Silkie and 1 SS Hamburg. 1 Naked Neck with fuzzy feet and an extra toe. 3 Blue Orps. 5 Ameracaunas, 4 blue or black and one chipmunk.

I'll work on posting the cute and fuzzy pics in a minute. Need to brew some Nighty Nighty and slurp it down while I photobucket. I have GOT to get more than 4 or 5 hours of sleep tonight!!!
