Here is a pic of my little Blue Mottled guy with the gold hackle & saddle.

He is out of a Splash D'uccle crossed with a Black Mottled hen.

All of our runs are covered (top) but not sides. We really have more problem with heat than cold. I, too, was surprised that the birds did as well as they did. The cochins I wasn't worried about but the D'uccles don't have the feather mass. If you go to this link, you can see some of our set up.

My DH is the winner in the recycle dept. The iron wheels came from the phone co. who uses them for cable. The pumpkin cage he made me for my birthday in Oct.

Merlin (Blue Mottled) was hatched here from a Splash X Black Mottled. The dark feathering you see looks black in the pic but is actually dark blue. He is my resident babysitter for all the chicks that go into the grow-out pen. He shows them where to sleep at night, where the food is & tucks everyone in at dark. He is my sweet boy~!

Thank you....He gave me some beautiful blue mottled babies this past Spring but unfortunately he & the teenagers were attacked by a Bobcat. An entire season of breeding in the toilet & of course, I have no roo to replace him

How awful and sad!!
I live in fear of something like that. We have hardware cloth runns (top & sides) with it buried almost a foot at the base. Mine only free-range when I'm home and WITH them.

Well, dealing with a Bobcat is quite an experience. He actually pulled welded wire (1 inch) away from where it was attached to the corner pole. He worked at the wire until he separated one strand that ran up & down from the cross wires. He was then able to reach inside with his paw (huge) & grab at the birds perched for the night. He pulled them all through the small hole he made in the wire & ate FOUR~!!!

Our wire is buried, too, but he stood on his hind legs & used his paws & teeth to rip the hole. Bobcats are our worst preditor.

I was rather thinking that would be a bit like dealing with a small cougar.

I'm not sure I'd want to try and face down a really hungry one all by myself.
