Hopefully it won't be like this all winter!
But got my doubts.
I think ill bring the birds in, but setup the heater and put a temp sensor in there (if i can manage it before Thursday). If it stays at least above freezing, i can trust leaving them out there... but then again, power is not stable in tx.

Still not stable? Are they calling for as severe winter weather for yall as they are us in TN?

Im already having nightmares of dead birds... ill bring them in for that night.. they dont cuddle much, it's like everyone takes their own nest box, they don't like their feathers touched, plus I've got sand. Ugh.
Every morning I have so much anxiety about opening up to a dead bird 😭 Was it too cold??? Did the big girls attack a baby/banty??? All good this morning though

Seems like power goes out if it rains or gets close to freezing. Ive only been here a year and power has been out several times. I wasn't even here for the crisis the year prior. Hundreds of people died, kind of ridiculous for a state that thinks they've got it all right and everyone else is wrong. 🤷‍♀️ have a few priority items to take care of, but house battery backup is definitely on the list!

Its going to go from 65 to 16 within a few hours in the late afternoon on Thurs, with 30+ mph gusts (which only makes things worse). I know chickens can be in snow, etc., but its been 70-80 this whole time, so that to teens seems just hard to adjust to so quick. I already have 2 brooders and a dog crate i can use, so there's not really a point in risking it. Its just 1-2 nights.

Yeah we've been frigid for bout a week now...barely getting to 40s during day so not as drastic a jump...supposed to be 7 later this week.
Not looking forward to winter.
So far the 7 week old Buff Silkies (the last to be put outside) are doing very well snd adjusting to life with the big babies in the last few days.
I pray all goes well with yours too!
I didn't have enough crates last year so my separate small flocks were in the garage on a tarp with a 3' dog fence around them...let's just say I'm glad the d'uccles and cochins weren't here then cuz they would have been everywhere BUT the tarp fenced area!!!

Mine mastered their flying as soon as i put them inside a dog fence!! I know exactly what you're talking about!

Im trying to find something that is an accurate source about D'uccles cold tolerance. I figured theyd be fine, but i notice Minnie and Daisy dont even leave the coop on cooler days (50s). So behavior wise, they aren't happy. I really don't want the headache of having them inside.. but.. just a couple nights. I can let them out in the mornings when it warms up and collect them again in the evening.

It’s been impossible to find anything! There’s a few locals that have them and don’t add extra heat, so far it’s been ok. They do seem to stay in the coop more than the other chickens. It’s more like a big covered run though… Its getting subzero again tonight and I did add a plastic sheet to the front of the coop just in case 🤞🏼

It must be cause you are a little more south than TN...even back in November when we had teens mine did fine with no heat plate in the coop...only Gabby puffs up and standoffish....oh wait she's always standoffish LOLOL!
Gabby is named after the angel Gabriel cause he had to have been softening her fall at 1 day old when she flew out of the box from kitchen counter top! Then again in garage a week later!
She's never been luvy dovy like Chatty and Cathy!

But I totally understand and hope it goes well ... they sure are our little babies!!! And winter ain't looking much warmer!
