D'uccle Thread

Okay gotcha, agree with all you said...I apologize for my assumptions as well. We're actually probably more alike than not;-) I definitely think you should give showing a try...we need more quality breeders of this breed. You said there were no shows within four hours? Well, that would keep me from showing much too...I hate driving. Another reason I quit showing dogs. We have a poultry show every spring and fall (not my town but nearby), and one in late August in another nearby town. Too hot to show then, I don't know why they hold it in August. So far I have not made it to any big shows like the Ohio Nationals. But I have only been showing for two years so I hope to get there maybe next November. My first show I was amazed at how "fun" it was...nothing like a dog show. You are given an exhibitor number and you go find the cages with your number on them, plop your birds in and sit back and wait and watch judging. There is a scorecard on each cage. I love seeing all the different breeds and sometimes they hold a pigeon/dove show at the same time. Saw some neat birds I'd never seen before - fancy white doves with collars and feathered feet. Really, I actually look forward to going whereas with dogs, I dreaded it every time. Last year I made a total fool out of myself in front of Shari McCollough (Master Exhibitor and longtime breeder of silkies). I went to see how my birds did after judging and my favorite pullet was missing. I just about had a heart attack. I ran up to Shari saying "my bird is gone!!". She told me she had been taken to "champion row". I didn't even know what that meant lol. But it was only my second show and I am still learning...and enjoying it!

That's the main reason keeping me from showing too. It's a four hour round trip, and since I don't have a license yet, I'd have to get some one to drive me. Maybe in a few years though.

On the showing subject, it is extremely exciting and fun! I was skeptical at first but started entering birds and I actually did pretty good. I've done better with Sumatras like reserve champ etc at big shows in the Northeast and I've had BB with D'uccles. Usually I dont see more than 5-10 D'uccles total. Although more competition, it would be great to see like 10-15 D'uccles! If anyone is interested in milles or mottleds I'll be selling eggs and hatching chicks come spring time. I work tons of hours but make sure to plan for Sunday's off. Shows are usually 2hr drives. I've driven to Maine which is 4hrs but well worth it! Sorry for the book!!!

We are probly alot alike. i would like to do shows i think but as i said i would need to see if OH will take over goats and guinea pigs and maybe my rabbits lol. i only have 3 mille fleur hens and 1 Porcelain D'uccle but i'm getting hatching eggs as soon as someone has some, i am on a few "waiting lists." i will get pictures of my girls and my roo so you guys can tell me what you think of them. i did not breed them so what they are is how i got them but they have nice boots and nice beards compared to others i have seen. i should go out and take pictures now while they are calmly sitting on their roosts. i can never get my birds to hold still for pictures, they all come over to flock at my feet.

Nice looking birds! I really like hen no. 1 and rooster no. 3.

Here are my two unrelated roosters:

This pic is from last year. He has filled out much more since then.

My second roo, pictured with a mix breed hen. I'm really liking his beard and spangled tail.

I do like that second Roo, talking about tails, the even white tips are really important. If you look at him from the rear does it come to a point at the top like an upside down V? My younger Roos top sickles kind of split but I'm hoping they grow perfect next molt.

I'm not shore, I'll have to look at him closely. my second rooster has white tips now that he has molted. I agree there, it is really hard to find birds with the white tips. Most birds I have seen do not.
