D'uccle Thread

It will get there, I am sure! The people currently handling the processing of checks and memberships no longer have chickens and are on the verge of 'retiring' from the club. I think I'm taking over the position in January....

That's what Karl and I discussed on Saturday, anyway!

I have a flock of lovely black d'Uccle pullets that won at Crossroads against a long-time breeder. On Saturday I talked him into trading me his black cockeral. He is currently falling in love with his new flock and I hope to hatch some chicks in about 7-8 weeks!

I need to take and post some pics. He's gorgeous, and smaller that my previous black roo. Really nice form, too.....

I would love to see some pictures of him and your hens!!

I need 3 volunteers to test my eggs for fertility.

My pullets are laying well-I have 5, they just started laying last week, and I am getting about 3 eggs a day. I have seen the roo doing his job, and I am putting 11 in my incubator today. The only light they have is a red heat lamp! I will save 3 days worth of eggs for you and you pay for the shipping. Send me a pm if you are interested.

I will send the first set on Monday.

I just read they do not do good in cold weather

what advice can you guys give me
I am in NJ
I have 1 ROO
and dont want anything to happen to him

he is in a covered run
should I wrap his run too??

Thanks

Does he have some kind of solid shelter that he can get into in the cold weather? He needs at the least a draft free, dry area. I don't think a tarp around a run would qualify especially in NJ... I have noticed that my Amber is fluffed up against the cold already and it was only down to the early thirties the last few nights. Don't want her to get sick so I have her in the shed with her buddy and they have a 100 W light bulb which takes the edge off the cold for her. If your guy is on his own he can't snuggle up with others for more heat so I would make him a tiny mini coop that has a roost in and maybe a 40W or less light bulb depending on the size of the cooplet and how close the bulb is to the roost. Just my thoughts ... I am sure someone else with more experience will be able to tell you more ... just doesn't sound like a good setup for your boy at the moment.

my babies from teddi...its really hard to get pics of them they wont sit still lol and they can get very talkitive. they are in with 3 fbcm and will snuggle up to them and under their wings i have tried to get pics of them doing this but since all babies are the same age its a bit hard lol

I have some BYC/FB friends that have them in Alaska and they do just dandy. They have built-in snowshoes, after all!!

Big thing is keep them in a draft-free enclosure when the temps get really low, and make sure they have regular access to water.

Last winter my bachelor pen was open air, but with a box area they could huddle and roost in that kept the wind off of them. They did just dandy, even on single digit nights (coldest was 7 degrees). I just had to make sure I watered them 2x a day when the waterers froze. They were healthier than some of the spoiled birds that had a 20 degree coop on those nights!

He does have 2 hens
he is in a covered dog run with a coop

I was asking should I tarp the sides too
to help with the winds of winter
if he needs a light I will set one up
so far they seam fine
