D'uccle Thread

Personally, I like the pronunciation: 'dew-clay' better than 'de-uckle'. The first sounds more elegant, and matches the birds elegant disposition.

That's just me.

I would like to hear how others pronounce it!

When it mentions "uccle" think of it like Brazil nuts. In Brazil they are just called nuts. So here, the d is appropriate and thus it is pronounced "dew-clay". Emphasis on the second syllable. The first time I heard Cackle hatchery pronunce it I giggled.

I just watched a video they did on Self blue d'Uccles, and I laughed as well! That's how the breeder in my area pronounces it.

My buff mottled hen: Is she actually a gold neck?????

The feathers on her feet were much longer but my chickens have a big community pen for now (when I am not breeding) and after gardens are gone and the man's corn has grown and been reaped, I will let them free range again.

I'm not sure what a mottled buff is but what I'm thinking that would look very much like a golden neck:) post some pics of them if you haven't already...

Being an APA Judge & having shown poultry for over 50 years is several states I have never heard anyone pronounce d'Uccle [the proper spelling] "dew-clay".
However, here on BYC where thr real poultry experts dwell, someone ocassionally says it's pronounced this way.
I'll bet from my 30 years of speaking french that you can't pronounce it the right way either...so everyone's in the same boat! The way you write stuff can be so condescending...you are entitled to your opinion, just try to say it with more tact and diplomacy.

For everyone else, the reason the d of d'Uccle is small is because it comes from ''de'' which means ''from'' in french...so d'Uccle would be translated to: from Uccle (the U being capital as it's the name of a place). Unless you're writing your thesis on the d'Uccle, I don't think anyone will judge you for it.

I have a splash hen that has been stealing every egg laid in her pen. I thought she only had at the most 8 eggs, but she has 20 eggs. What shall i do. I think i will give her a few and throw the rest in the incubator.
My hatch that started yesterday is going great. They are popping like popcorn. There is some cute babies in there.
Hey Rusty you going to Mt Hope this weekend?
