D'uccle Thread

My d'Uccles are the best egg hiders around here!

They're wintering in our detached garage and I keep them in their pen until I think they're done laying before letting them out to "fertilize" my husband's garage floor. LOL

Anyway, I just spend 10 minutes looking EVERYWHERE for the missing bantam. I finally spotted an egg on the floor, and then quickly found her with TEN more eggs!

They used to do the same thing when they were out in the big coop and yard and I just thought they were terrible layers. Then I started finding piles and just realized they were master egg hiders.

I understand that point but that's quite a lot of black to molt out. I've had a couple dark ones like that, I waited maybe a year, year and a 1/2 and not a whole lot of difference showing wise. But yes they do get more white with each molt so I guess there's a small possibility with patience...I hope they mature in your favor:)

You're probably right. I don't have a lot of experience with Mille Fleur d'uccles having only raised 500-600 of them.

Would you put money on it? Only kidding Haha, but there really is no end to your sarcasm, it's quite entertaining. Would it be more efficient to just get ones that come out starting decent for the few bucks it costs to get some chicks or the feed bill for a year to wait and see if your lucky?

Sonrise Silkies-feel free to post more pics in the future if you decide to hold on to them....I would genuinely like to see if the black molts out.

Thanks,

I think I will hold on to them, I have all ready culled the ones I didn't think were ever going to make it, the this foot feathers or lack of muff....some of these are sure strange colors but they are decent little birds and full of personality.
Yes, I will post pics, I love to take pics and keep records of how something grows and turns out., I can tell all ready on some that what you see is NOT what you get.
The white takes longer and sometimes other colors pop up also. Still learning, and so glad to have you all to help.
And I'm glad you don't mind me posting pics......hopefully it will not only help me but maybe some other folks with questions.

I think you are right it would be much better to choose them when you can really see what you are getting, they aren't THAT expensive.
But some folks enjoy nothing better than to hatch and raise up chicks, and it really is a learning experience.
I do think though if you are starting with good stock or buying from a GOOD HONEST breeder than you can expect some nice birds to grow up from those eggs or chicks.
It's when you take a chance and buy from unknown or from hatchery or something that you are just rolling the dice, and believe me the game is rigged sometimes.
The birds I got, I bought from a person who raises them, sells eggs, [but I guess anyone can do that.]
I just wanted some so bad I was willing to throw the dice. I ended up with a handful of ones I'm not happy with but also got a few wthat I really like. They may not suit other folks but they are making me happy and I'm enjoying their pretty colors and oh so cute antics! Plus they are bright, healthy , alert and active as heck!

I hope you post lots of pics as they come along - I am fussing with some coloring in my own flock - not to sell or start a new line - just for my own pleasure - and I think it would help me greatly to see what develops in your mixes.

Yep, I'm with you, I have these birds for ME. The Silkies and the Showgirls of course were for my pleasure also but they had been with me since the 70's and experimenting was not interesting, I KNEW what I was doing ....and what to expect.
But these are new and there is so much variety, plus they are tiny and I can have lots and they "change" as they age, Silkies didn't change.
I would love to see the "before and after" pics of some more birds. Mine aren't really grown but the changes are still dramatic, though not as amazing as my Calico Cochin bantams.

Sonrise Silkies, I really like to see weird colored d'uccles so do please keep posting pictures! I really a intrigued by the lighter colored one you posted. I am breeding some fun colors together this spring and am hoping to get some interesting results. Of course, spring does NOT want to come it seems so i am at a standstill. My breeding pens are still covered in snow right now and their houses are completely inaccessible. Grrrrrrr.....
