I had 3 MF chicks, day olds. Their down shades went from light, to dark. I found that my cockerel, the darkest one, had more black, and was actually lacking a lot of white. The middle shade chick was a caramel color, while the chick with the lightest shade is still the lightest. I don't know if it works that way, but that's how it worked for me.I've found in MF that chick down has absolutely no correlation to adult plummage. Believe me, I wanted to believe it would be easy to cull lesser quality birds at a young age, but with d'uccles, all you can do is wait until they are at least six months old.
Anyone else care to comment on this one? If there's a system, I would love to know it!
