D'uccle Thread

He sure looks like a throwback. I know that some people did interbreed MF duccle to Cochins trying to create the MF Cochins, but it doesn't work well and muddies the genes with beards and stiff tails and vulture hocks. Since calicos are by definition culls from MF projects, it makes sense that something like this could pop up.

Thanks, that really clears up some questions. But brings up more. IF he should turn out well would you think I'm making a mistake to use him on my D'Uccle hens? Remember just for pretty pets.
Can you tell anything at all about him from those pics? I mean does he appear to be D'Uccle enough to hopefully produce something decent?
I guess I should try and get a better rooster, but like i said I just raise a very small handful of chicks, just for my own flock, and I LIKE this little guy!
Thanks for the help!

If you breed him to duccles, you'll be muddying their genetics with cochin genes too. You certainly could and cochin Duccle crosses are some of my favorite mixed breeds, jut be aware that his offspring are unlikely to be show quality and the cochin traits could pop up in later generations.

Thank you for the replies. I hope no one objects to me hogging the conversations? Don't seem to be a lot of activity right now.
I realize that any chicks from this rooster will be considered cross bred. no doubt about that...no matter what I use him on.
Here he was at 2 months old.

Easy to tell he was "special". Not much Cochin about him.....he stands out though, he has a "bigshot" attitude.
I'm just dreaming.......might not like him at all later on or perhaps get a really good rooster in the mean time.
I love my Cochins and also the D'Uccles, perhaps I might get best of both worlds even though not good examples of either one.
I enjoy visiting with you, and anyone else who wants to join in, just for the love of chickens and specially these two breeds. Thanks!

You might consider posting about him in the Mixed Breed thread too. At the very least, people will have a deep appreciation for him there.

I can definitely see the cochin traits in him. His belly and the underside of his butt are very fluffy even though he seems to have vulture hocks coming in over it. His wing set is more cochin than duccle too: high and tight instead of in line with his hocks. The traits that scream duccle are that lovely muff and beard, as well as vulture hocks and narrow tall tail.

This is Mojo.....bless his heart, I've been trying to find a girlfriend for him and it's just not going well at all. Maybe in the spring.....unless somebody in here has a pullet or two??

Mojo looks pretty pleased with himself anyhow, girl friend or not.
Do you have any other breed of chickens? If you do and have one that is maybe not just really as great a representative of her breed you might just let her live with him.
I had one lone Paint Silkie hen and she lives with a Cochin, very happy couple and the most adorable kids you ever saw.

I just hatched a little bunch of D'Uccles, purebred, they have a MF daddy and some real pretty Mamas, that I don't know what you call their color.
Question I have some pretty light color chicks, even yellow with dark stripes... What's going on?
Here are some pics.

The Pullets [above]

The chicks, do not look at the hen, she just hatched the eggs, has nothing to do with the chick breeding.
What color comes from those light chicks? There are 6 chicks, couple are darker.
They are 1 day old on pics. Hatched Oct 19
pretty!!!!!!!

I would say that if he has a nice personality and all you want are pets, go ahead and breed him. Why not?
