D'uccle Thread

Well, yesterday I adopted 2 mille fleur/cochin mix chicks! I believe they are 1 or 2 weeks old? I can't remember what the seller told me. They have some feathering on their wings, but still plenty of fuzz! I know they are teeny, but anyone have any ideas on their sex?? I can't keep roosters, so I hope at least one is a girl... They both look to have little combs on their heads. Does that necessarily mean boys?? (Pardon the poop in the photo!)

My chicks came from the same farm that my 2 hens came from. They actually have the same mama as my polish/cochin hen, Lilie! I'll be keeping them inside for a while yet.

lilcrow, lavender x mf = black (although mine leaked some lacing)
Got any pics of the moms?

Tina D, need better head shots to determine gender, and being crosses they might be 'sneaky' and not show right away.

MyShunShyn, I'd guess roo (not knowing age but guessing by lack of mille color so far that he's around 6-10 weeks).

cbrown86, I agree with lilcrow that you have blue mille cockerel. he's got some nice blue at an early age and good middle toe feathering for a young one, too.

GC, glad things are getting better and you have some time to post! Looking forward to hearing more about how your various projects are going!

How old?

Well, to be honest I am not sure of the age. We got him/her from an assorted Bantam bin at Atwoods and I am guessing that at that time the age was around 3-4 weeks, pretty well feathered. That was about a month ago so that would put the age at around 8 weeks, but just a guess.

At 8 weeks, with a comb like that I would say Cockerel. Adorable!

Well............I've got them as of just a bit ago when I went out to lock up, but now I'm having trouble editing them for the web. I'll get them up there soon. Are you saying to consider the splash hen as a straight MF? When I checked the calculator, I started with MF, but changed the B/B/S gene to blue, thereby making her a blue MF. When I calculated that cross I got 100% lavenders, and so far up to this point that's what I've been getting.

Im new to chickens period. Only had mine for about 5 weeks or so but i'm learning a lot and loving it all. I have started a mixed flock and can pretty much see the similarities between them on how their wings and tails should be etc. In looking at the couple of Milles I have ...seeing they are different I thought they were not well bred. I saw their wings hung much lower. After seeing pictures on this thread it looks like thats the way they are suppose to be. So my question is where do you look to find information on "chicken conformation" like you would for dogs?
