D'uccle Thread

Be patient and it will become obvious, Porcelains have a pattern to them, Lavenders do not.

Thanks! He has a little bit of yellowish but I'm not seeing any patterning at all. Trying to find a nice home for him and don't know what color to call him. He sure is sweet and pretty, for what it's worth! If I had a pullet or two for him, he'd get to stay.

I went back and looked at with my cochin filter eyes and I've got to disagree with you Nate. I didn't comment on how good a d'Uccle it is but since I raise both Cochins and d'Uccle I've got to stick with my first assessment. The tail is very heavy but my guess is it can carry it much higher than this picture shows. It would be a much worse Cochin than d'Uccle. IMHO
We may never know.

I agree w/Lilcrow, it's a D'uccle. BUT at 7-8 mos old it should have streamers on rear as well as hackels to be a roo...I see none on this bird, so my vote is pullet

i'm thinking pullet as well. at that age the comb should be much bigger if it was a cockerel!

Page 4 of this thread discusses the pronunciation. They have several links to sites where you can hear someone actually speak the work.

Hey ya'll! Been kinda tied up for a while. Hope everyone has recovered from the storms and isn't losing birds to the heat....

I have way more birds than I should and have been paring down slowly but surely. At first I couldn't keep up with the broodies

but the heat and molting have taken a toll on how many eggs are even available to set.

I am EXCITED because there is a show July 30th and I am going to take a BUNCH of juvies and let the judge help 'rank' them for me.

The trio of whites and the quad of lavs are a no-brainer, but I want them to become accustomed to the process.

Only 2 millie girls are old enough, but I already know they really aren't up to snuff. They were a side trade and seem more hatchery than heritage.
But I have 3 cockerals that I'm really pleased with! 2 are from my mf-x-project pairing and one is from the trade eggs. He'd be fresh genes, but the other 2 are 50% fresh genes so I want them ranked and then I'll see if I agree.
I have 4 younger ladies that wil be ready for fall shows that I'm very happy with, and 3 more little girls waiting in the wings. So I am currently pleased with the mf flock at the moment!

Sadly, all my black cockerals either have a touch of red or gold lacing, or a touch of blue. Am keeping the lads with the blue. The black pullets (so far) are strongly black, except one has yellow feet. I think this is a DQ but haven't read my SOP yet.

Last year I aggressively culled for temperment, and have seen the results of it this year. Very sweet, fairly steady birds. I have a couple that are flighty but not excessively so (and they're young). The cockerals are very defensive of their girls but not mean.

I am getting excited about all the shows this fall!! Especially the IN show....

BTW, Ronnie Tallent told me it's pronounced dee-OO-culls, so that's what I go with now, despite my thoughts that doo-Clay sounds ever so much more elegant.

Concur on the hen, and I wouldn't kick her out of the coop except for what looks like a mostly bare middle toe. Even my improved lavenders have 'softer' feathers than the millies. I think that just comes with the lav gene.

Edited to add that IMO my black birds have slightly 'softer' feathers, too. Even the one from RT.

Lori, I must show you what Lucky and his girls have given me...at least the Cuties and mist unusual. I am posting from my phone so I will edit until I get the three pics posted.

This little girl looks like parents and is almost 5 weeks old
