D'uccle Thread

Monday was the TN Valley Fair show and I had a great time! The birds did well, but the competition that entered didn't show up

3 different people entered d'Uccles, brought their other birds but not the d'Uccles. I was disappointed. I would rather have some competition!!!

There were mille fleur booted bantams there, but a couple of the birds had beards. I think the owner had a d'Uccle sneak into their pen at some point. It's the first time I've seen a booted bantam at the fair though!

I talked to an old-timer who's buddy had raised d'Uccles long ago. He had really nice things to say about my favorite mf cockeral and my lavender cockeral.

Next show is Crossroads in IN. I have enough millies to put on a display, but was advised to enter them as singles or trios. Sounds like displays weren't very well-managed in the past. I think I will drag Tennessee out of retirement and make him go. Since there will be a club meeting during the show, there should be a LOT of d'Uccle long-time breeders there. I want some input.

My broodies are still hatching little ones and kicking them out of the nest so that they can keep being bators. Yesterday a teeny tiny yellow chick had 'treed' 4 millie pullets on the water jug. It wanted a mama and they wanted it to go away. I sure wish I'd had a camera! It was hysterical!!

I took the newbie and put her in the brooder, then pulled 3 siblings from under mama. She'll have about 4 more this afternoon. Some of these are experimental babes, from the touch-of-blue boy over black hens. The others are millies, so Tennessee is obviously doing his duties on the hens, who are just coming out of molt. Yay!

I think I am getting the hand of these complex chicken genetics (not to mention the ZW stuff) So if i breed a mille fleur hen with a porcelian roo I BELIEVE i will get a normal mille fleur, but if I have a blue mille fleur hen and breed her to a porcelian-since the blue is a dilution of black-what will I get?-all the black knocked out but keeping the brown = golden neck or mottled?

I actually started out with the porcelains on a fluke impulsive feed store buy. I'd heard how sweet Mille fleurs were, but the porcelains made me fall in love with the breed. I do have some really sweet mille hens growing up right now with porcelain heritage.
