Cross-posted in the predators and pests forum - Here‘s two reasons why my girls can not free range anymore. The bear is a well-behaved sort of fellow, making twice yearly visits (on average). The bobcat is a known duck killer who ate my Rouen, Puddleduck, last summer. Honestly, I just saw and uploaded these, . I will check the barn to make sure there wasn’t a break in in a couple of hours as it’s 4 am and I haven’t really slept yet.

So, Daphne is in need of prayers again. She’s having a severe reproductive issue flare-up. DH was in charge of ducks last night and this AM and he didn’t notice anything. However, she was very lethargic + tail down this afternoon. I gave her a whopping dose of calcium and have her soaking. There’s no palpable egg, but that’s not abnormal as she rarely has ever had a solid egg.

She is refusing even her favorite treats right now.

The only vet that would see her is closed right now, so I’m just doing supportive care.

I have some leftover Clavamox (only antibiotic I have on hand) that I thought of giving her due to concerns about potential EYP, but I’m holding off to see if the calcium will do the trick and dislodge what I assume is an overly large soft-shelled egg (unless it’s EYP, in which case…) My reason for holding off on the Clavamox is that I don’t want to cause GI upset, thereby causing a sharper drop in appetite. Also, I have no proof that an infection is present.

Anyways, please send any prayers or supportive vibes her way. She’s struggled with repro issues since I got her as an adult 4 years ago, and has not had a great spring so far.

If something happens, I will be heartbroken, as will Matilda.

Sometimes, it makes me want to give up on ducks, but I could never give up those I have, so I’m sure I will continue no matter what. Anyways, forgive my ramble. I’m going to check on her soon.

Thank you! She was prescribed this Calsorb stuff the last time she went to her DVM for the same symptoms. Luckily, I stocked up last fall and still have some on hand. I just tucked her in for the night after a brisk foraging walk (exercise seems to help her “move things along”) and she is a little brighter and took a couple of bites of dinner. Crossing fingers and toes!
