Duck Antibiotics? (Prolapsed Penis)

Thank you so much for the support everyone. I have to admit it was a tough thing to do. He really is a very sweet duck, and I hope he heals well. He seems to be doing pretty good this morning. I appreciate the nice comments.

I am still interested in finding out about the antibiotics if anyone has any info on that. I have 2 Pekins, 2 Rouens and the 2 Cayugas we just took in. I would love to know what to give in the event they ever need anything.

Just wanted to give an update on Flip, the no-longer penis prolapsed duck. He has healed quite well and is doing great and quite healthy. He has even been seen trying to have relations with his mate though I do not know how successful he will be with that. I just thought is would be good to post something for someone's future reference if they are having the same trouble with their boy. It is not a fun procedure to do but I am so glad I did it. We have a fine and healthy boy now.

this situation is pretty common and usualyl happens due to too much breeding ambition ect... usually found in the smaller ducks such as calls. he should be fine but fertility may now be an issue.

OH MY.. that would be the most horred thing ever

poor little guy.. thank you for sharing everything.. its always nice to know what to do when this kinda thing happens..

now with that said you can take some antibiotic ointment and nuke it in the microwave for a little bit until it gets oily.. then drench a cotton ball with it and dab the area

well Im going thru the same thing.. I have had ducks a yr... I had read about it so I sorta knew what is was when it happened.
Iasked ppl in here questions also.. it didnt seem to bother him , I used Vasoline and neosporin on him and kept the pools and such very clean.
I did seperate him for a couple days but that was way to stressful for him and with only 5 ducks at the time, he was better off with them.
I took him to the vet and we decieded he was doing well so we waited til the end had FINALLY died off (3 months) and returned to the vet
and he snipped the dead part off. I continue with neosporin everyday ,, it is 98% retracted but there is a small dead tip that the vet said
will still fall off.. Ive watched him very close tho and he eats, drinks and is verrry merrry health wise... 2 vet visits and one snip and my vet
only chrged a total of 35 bucks

I don't think the duck's penis is very sensitive. My only regret with my poor boy (who is now 7 yrs old and doing splendidly!) is that we waited so long, he took more damage while we waited. We had to cut so much that he was never fertile. I found it emotionally really hard, but should it happen again, I will toughen myself up, remembering he was happier with it trimmed than dragging and getting damaged. Fortunately it's not nearly as bad for the duck as it sounds, they are not the same as mammals. Nor is there much blood supply. Still.... not fun.

Thanks for letting us know how well he's doing. Great news for sure.

Hi I am in Australia and have the same problem with my Drake.. his is the looking drake of all time !! I raised him from one day old in my kitchen until he was old enough to go outside.
I took him to the vet, cost $200.00 and was given Metacam tablets 1 mg ( inflammatory ) and some cream.
At the time he was able to retract the penis but kept chasing the girls, being the naughty boy he is was then unable to retract it.
He is in his own clean pen with a straw floor, nice clean pond changed every day but can hear the girls in the next pen.
The end of the penis has gone white and looks quite dead now and the rest of it is swollen.
Can't get my hands on the Metacam and don't want to give anything else like human medication. the vet said bring him back and we will operate and the cost is $700.00 ahhhhhhhhhh.
I am bathing the penis in warm slated water as often as I can and rubbing the cream on the swollen area and trying to ease it back in.
I didn;t know any of this stuff when I decided to get ducks !!!!!
